A Unique Memorial Day Message
The Pentagon made a surprising choice for its Memorial Day message, selecting Kid Rock, a musician known for his pro-Trump stance, to deliver a special tribute. This decision sparked a mix of reactions from the public. On this solemn day, the nation honors and remembers the sacrifices of America’s fallen service members.
Kid Rock, recognizable by his sunglasses, black hoodie, and large chain, delivered a brief but heartfelt message on Monday morning. The Department of Defense, often referred to as the Department of War, shared the message through its rapid response account. The post read, “Memorial Day message from @KidRock.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth led the Memorial Day services at Arlington National Cemetery. Kid Rock, who has become a close friend of Hegseth, began his message with a simple greeting.
“Hey everyone, this is Kid Rock,” he said. “On this Memorial Day, we are remembering the sacrifice and service of so many who are not with us today. It’s a special day. We’re thinking of them. Once again, I wanted to say thank you.”
He continued, “God bless all of you for your sacrifice, for your service.” Kid Rock concluded his message with a salute, adding, “Keep on Kid Rocking in the free world. God bless you all.”
Another Trump ally, Superman actor Dean Cain, also shared a Memorial Day message that was posted on the department’s social media account. However, not everyone was pleased with Kid Rock’s involvement.
Some critics took to social media to express their dissatisfaction. One person wrote, “Did the White House run out of actual veterans, or did they just think a monster truck rally vibe was the best way to honor the ultimate sacrifice?” Another commented, “I don’t want to hear from Kid Rock on Memorial Day.”
Others questioned whether Kid Rock was being paid by the White House. “Is he on the White House payroll now?” one person asked. “How inappropriate. Hegseth needs to keep his bromance off your posts.”
Hegseth has praised Kid Rock as a “patriot” and even gave him a ride in the gunner’s seat of an AH-64 Apache helicopter last month. “Joined my friend Kid Rock — and some of our great U.S. Army Apache pilots — for a ride this morning,” Hegseth posted on X at the time.
This event followed an earlier incident in March when Army helicopters hovered near Kid Rock’s Nashville-area mansion in what appeared to be a tribute. After the stunt, the helicopter pilots were temporarily removed from duty, but Hegseth intervened to lift their suspensions.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell explained the situation at the time, stating that the flights supported a “community relations event” for a White House-led initiative called Freedom 250. This initiative is coordinating events for America’s 250th anniversary commemoration.
“Robert ‘Kid Rock’ Ritchie participated in multiple troop touches with service members and filmed videos for Memorial Day, America’s 250th birthday, and for his Freedom 250 tour,” Parnell said in the statement.
Kid Rock has been featured frequently in the Trump administration’s social media posts. One notable instance involved a bizarre stunt with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., where the two appeared in a workout video shirtless. This display drew criticism from California Democrat Linda Sanchez during a hearing before the House Ways and Means Committee.
“You suspended this pro-vaccine messaging campaign, but somehow you’re spending taxpayer dollars to drink milk shirtless in a hot tub with Kid Rock. And somehow you think that’s a better public health message,” Sanchez said.
