Rice reacts to West Ham’s relegation at Arsenal’s title party

Declan Rice’s emotions were evident when he discovered that West Ham United had been relegated during Arsenal’s Premier League title celebrations on Sunday. The moment was particularly poignant as Rice and his current team took the spotlight at Selhurst Park to mark their first Premier League title in 22 years after a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Before heading back to the changing room to prepare for the trophy presentation, Rice made it clear that he was checking the final league results to see if West Ham could avoid the drop. Despite a 3-0 win at home against Leeds United, the result wasn’t enough to save the Hammers, as Tottenham secured a 1-0 win against Everton, finishing two points above the relegation zone in 17th place.

After seeing the confirmation of West Ham’s relegation, Rice reacted with visible frustration, slapping his hands together and walking away with his head in his hands. His emotional response highlighted the deep connection he still has with the club that shaped his career.

Earlier this month, before Arsenal’s 1-0 win against West Ham, Rice spoke about the role his former club played in his development. He emphasized how West Ham provided him with opportunities that other clubs, like Chelsea, did not.

“West Ham gave me everything,” Rice said. “Without them, there’s no me. They gave me a chance when others didn’t, and a lot of people there really pushed me forward. David Moyes, Slaven Bilic, Manuel Pellegrini made me captain. There are so many good things about that club.”

He continued, “It’s not nice to see them in this position, but it’s football. I have a job to do on Sunday. We’re trying to win a Premier League title, and it’s the business end of the season. We want to win every game, and I’m sure they want to win every game too. So, yeah, may the best team win.”

Rice’s comments reflect the bittersweet nature of the situation. While he is focused on helping Arsenal secure the title, his heart remains with West Ham, where he spent his formative years as a player.
