Marlon Wayans, known for his work in comedy and film, has spoken out about his friendship with Dave Chappelle, emphasizing the importance of maintaining loyalty to a long-time friend while also supporting his transgender son, Kai. Despite the controversy surrounding Chappelle’s recent material, Wayans stands by his friend, stating that he believes Chappelle’s intentions are not rooted in malice.
Understanding Chappelle’s Position
In a 2021 special titled The Closer, Chappelle made statements that aligned him with the Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERF) movement, defending author J.K. Rowling and expressing views that gender is fixed based on biology. He has also made jokes about trans women, comparing their anatomy to plant-based meat substitutes and mocking the concept of gender identity.
Wayans explained that he sees these jokes as part of the broader landscape of comedy, where artists push boundaries to challenge societal norms. “You have to be a comedian to understand that,” he said, highlighting the need to respect Chappelle’s creative freedom.
A Friend’s Perspective
Wayans emphasized that he would not support someone if he believed they were driven by hatred. “I wouldn’t hang with Dave if he was full of hate. I don’t hang with people like that,” he told Variety. He stressed that he knows Chappelle’s heart and believes his intention is not to “punch down.” Instead, he sees Chappelle as defending the front line of comedy against censorship.
Wayans described himself as a bridge between his friend and his child. “As a comedian, I respect his journey. And as a friend, I respect his journey. And for my child, I respect their journey,” he added. He explained how he can separate his feelings as a father and a friend to help both sides understand each other.
Learning from His Child
Wayans shared how learning about Kai’s transition taught him what true unconditional love means. He noted that it took him a week to move from denial to full acceptance. “All of my kids are gifts, and our love is the wrapping paper,” he said, issuing a strong warning to anyone who might target his child.
A Strong Stand Against Hate
Wayans made it clear that he will not tolerate any form of hate directed at his family. “Transphobia is a form of hate. Homophobia is a form of hate. Racism is a form of hate. All those small-hearted, small-minded people, there’s a h-ll for you,” he stated. He added, “If you think you’re gonna bully my child, go somewhere else. It’s not going to happen. I won’t stand for it.”
