IPL 2026 Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set for Test Debut at 15

A New Star Emerges in the IPL 2026 Season

The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has introduced a remarkable talent to the cricketing world—15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals. His performances have been nothing short of spectacular, and many are now suggesting that he is ready for an early Test debut.

Since his 2025 IPL debut, Sooryavanshi has made a significant impact. He has accumulated 692 runs across 18 matches, with an impressive strike rate of 224.67. He has also managed to hit two centuries and three fifties, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. His success extends beyond the IPL, as he continues to excel in age-group cricket competitions, participating in all available formats.

Beyond T20 Specialization

While most explosive batters in the IPL are often seen as T20 specialists, former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Sooryavanshi possesses unique abilities that can translate well into all three formats of the game, including Test cricket. Ashwin, one of India’s most successful Test spinners, has praised Sooryavanshi’s potential and urged for him to take on red-ball cricket sooner rather than later.

Ashwin shared his thoughts during a segment on JioHotstar. “He is taking every bowler down. I wouldn’t mind watching him in a Test match, and I wouldn’t mind watching him in all three formats of the game. Get him onto cricket grounds, get people coming along, because he is going to entertain you.”

His comments carry weight, given his own illustrious career, where he took 537 wickets in 106 matches, maintaining an average of 24.00.

Rising Pressure and Expectations

Sooryavanshi is currently carrying a heavy load in the IPL 2026 season. He leads the Rajasthan Royals’ batting charts with 440 runs in 10 matches. However, this responsibility has raised concerns among experienced players, particularly Ashwin.

Ashwin expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation, urging senior players such as Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Donovan Ferreira to step up their performance. He emphasized that Sooryavanshi, at just 15 years old, should not be expected to bear the entire team’s burden.

“there is no point asking him to do things he shouldn’t be doing at this stage of his career. He has experienced players like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Donovan Ferreira to follow. He shouldn’t be the one carrying that burden. If he can give them flying starts, then with the batting line-up they have, they should be winning games like those comfortably.”

A Disappointing Performance

Despite his overall success, Sooryavanshi faced a setback in a recent match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Jaipur. He scored only 36 runs from 16 balls before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. This failure had a ripple effect on the team, leading to a major collapse.

The Rajasthan Royals struggled to chase a target of 230 runs. Apart from Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja, none of the other batters managed to score more than 20 runs. The team ended up scoring just 152 runs in 16.3 overs, which was a disappointing performance.

Impact on the Points Table

This loss caused the Rajasthan Royals to drop to fifth place in the points table, with a total of 12 points. To keep their playoff hopes alive, the team needs to secure victories in two out of their remaining three games. This will require a strong showing from both Sooryavanshi and the rest of the squad.

As the season progresses, the focus will remain on Sooryavanshi’s development and how he adapts to the pressures of professional cricket. His journey offers an exciting glimpse into the future of Indian cricket, with many hoping to see him thrive on the international stage.
