Joe Cole Calls for Experienced Signings to Revive Chelsea
Joe Cole has urged Chelsea to bring in experienced players during the summer transfer window, suggesting names like John Stones, Jordan Henderson, and Robert Lewandowski could play a crucial role in developing younger members of the squad. The former Chelsea and England winger believes that adding seasoned professionals would provide much-needed guidance and stability to the club’s current youth-led approach.
Chelsea’s recent performance has been disappointing, with the team struggling under the management of Liam Rosenior. The decline in form ultimately led to Rosenior’s dismissal, leaving the club in ninth place in the Premier League table. Despite winning the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup last summer, it seems that a significant overhaul is necessary for the west London giants to return to their previous level of success.
The situation has sparked increased scrutiny of Chelsea’s youth-focused transfer strategy, with players like Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella expressing concerns about decisions made at the top. With Calum McFarlane now overseeing first-team duties on an interim basis, finding a permanent manager is a top priority for the club as they prepare for their remaining league matches.
While a victory in this year’s FA Cup final could offer some relief to fans, Cole believes it will take time before the club can truly be in a “healthy position” again. He suggests that bringing back former manager Jose Mourinho could be the best move for Chelsea to regain fan support.
A Potential Move for Mourinho
Cole believes that a realistic and audacious move would be to bring back Mourinho, who previously led Chelsea to multiple successes. According to Cole, this move could help restore confidence among fans and players alike.
“Say that this is what we can do, and just let the man take charge of the club. Just say, ‘Rebuild my club for me, we’re going to step back, you get us back on track.’ Give him a long contract, and tell the players and the fans just to take the transition. Tell the fans, ‘We’ve given you what you want. Jose is in charge of bringing the players in. Jose is in charge of everything.’”
Cole added that while it may take a few years, he is confident that Chelsea would be in a healthier position within three years. He also mentioned that there are reasons why Real Madrid might be considering Mourinho, despite his current status.
Targeting Experienced Players
With John Stones set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season and Robert Lewandowski available as a free agent, Cole sees both as ideal additions to Chelsea’s squad. He believes that these experienced players could provide leadership and mentorship to the younger generation.
“The thing is, it doesn’t work, then his confidence dips, and there’s no structure around him to help him, and he needs to help himself as well. So, what happens is these great young players are not in the right environment.”
Cole emphasized the importance of having experienced players around the young talent to ensure they develop properly. He suggested that Stones, in particular, could be a valuable addition, as well as Lewandowski, who would fill the role of a centre forward.
Other Potential Targets
In addition to Stones and Lewandowski, Cole highlighted Jordan Henderson as another potential target. He noted that Henderson’s presence could bring a positive influence to the team, even if his performances on Match of the Day have not always been spectacular.
“I said Jordan Henderson last season and people laughed. Look at what Brentford Football Club have done, and nobody’s going, ‘Hold on a minute.’ I know he’s not been blowing the doors off on Match of the Day. But he sets the tone, and he’s helped players around him, all the untangible things you can’t see.”
Cole believes that Chelsea’s focus on young players has left them without the necessary guidance and structure. He argues that experienced players like Henderson could help create a more balanced and successful team.
Recent Performance and Future Outlook
Chelsea managed to halt their losing streak in a recent match against Liverpool, drawing 1-1 at Anfield. While the result was a positive step, the club remains nine points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa in the Premier League table.
Interim manager Calum McFarlane praised the team’s response after conceding early but acknowledged the need for improvement. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to build on their recent performance as they prepare for their remaining fixtures against Tottenham and Sunderland.
