Nicolas Cage’s Big Movie Role Rejections Revealed

Nicolas Cage Reveals Major Movie Roles He Turned Down

Nicolas Cage, the 62-year-old actor known for his unique performances and eclectic filmography, has shared insights into two significant movie roles he turned down in the past. In an interview with Variety, he discussed his near-misses with iconic films that eventually became blockbusters.

The Green Goblin and Spider-Man

One of the most notable roles Cage almost took was the supervillain Green Goblin in the 2002 Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire. However, he ultimately stepped away from the role, which went to Willem Dafoe due to creative differences. Cage recalled a conversation with director Sam Raimi during a lunch where he suggested a scene where Spider-Man would crawl around like a spider when alone. This idea was not included in the final film.

Cage also mentioned that he had considered taking on the role of Lloyd Christmas in the 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber alongside Jim Carrey. However, he opted for another project called Leaving Las Vegas instead.

The Impact of His Decisions

Despite both films becoming massive successes, Cage expressed no regrets about his choices. He explained that his decision to take on Leaving Las Vegas was the right one for him at the time. The 1995 romantic drama film saw Cage star opposite Elisabeth Shue, and he later won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

In the 2002 metafictional comedy-drama Adaptation, Cage worked with Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton. The film was critically acclaimed and earned four Oscar nominations that year.

A New Superhero Role

In the same interview, Cage spoke about his upcoming series, Spider-Noir, where he finally plays a superhero that aligns with his creative vision. The Amazon Prime Video series premiered on the streamer and airs on MGM+ on Wednesday, May 27.

The show follows a private investigator named Ben Reilly (played by Cage) in New York City during the Great Depression era. The story sees the superhero grieving over the death of his wife, played by Diane Kruger, and deciding to retire his Spider-Man alter ego. However, he is compelled to put his crime-fighting mask back on after meeting nightclub singer Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) and getting involved in a case about World War I veterans imbued with strange powers.

Spider-Noir was created by Oren Uziel and adapted from the Marvel Comics’ character Spider-Man Noir.

A Passion for Storytelling

Cage described the experience of working on Spider-Noir as transporting him to another time. He emphasized the importance of imagination in acting, stating that it is the actor’s greatest tool. “If you don’t have the imagination to want and believe you’re in this situation so it’s believable to the audience, it’s not going to work,” he said.

He also highlighted the need for creativity and originality in storytelling. “And if you don’t have the imagination to create something that’s outside the box, magic, and different, it’s going to be boring.”
