The Surprising Truth About Stuart Little
There are some things we take for granted, and one of them is the assumption that certain characters or terms have a clear meaning. For instance, many people might think that paprika comes from a spicy pepper, but in reality, many large manufacturers use sweet bell peppers instead. Similarly, the term “Wi-Fi” is often misunderstood as an acronym, but it actually doesn’t stand for anything.
Another surprising revelation came when I learned that Stuart Little, the beloved character from the book and film, is not actually a mouse. This fact has sparked a lot of discussion online, especially after a post on X by Chris Evangelista, a film critic and editor of Slash Film. It turns out that in the original books, Stuart Little is a human who looks like a mouse. The story is based on the novel Stuart Little by E.B. White, the same author of Charlotte’s Web.
The first chapter of this book, titled “In The Drain,” sets the tone with a haunting description of Stuart’s arrival: “When Mrs Frederick C. Little’s second son arrived, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse.” The story continues to describe how Stuart, who is only about two inches tall, resembles a mouse in every way. He even wears a grey hat and carries a small cane. Despite this, the publisher Harper Collins markets the book as a “classic novel about a small mouse… born to a family of humans.” However, sources like Britannica are more direct, describing it as a story about a “two-inch-tall boy who resembles a mouse.”
This revelation has led to a lot of questions, including when an A24 remake of Stuart Little will be released. People have shared their thoughts on the matter, with some finding the concept disturbing. Others have pointed to historical myths, such as the Dutch belief in sooterkins, which were thought to be rat-like afterbirths of some women. But this isn’t the first time internet users have come across this information. A Reddit post on r/todayilearned in 2018 highlighted the truth about Stuart Little’s species.
One user, u/Atoning_Unifex, noted that Stuart tries to get close to a girl named Harriet Ames, who is described as being “shorter” than him. However, Harriet does not look like a mouse. The story mentions that Stuart was drawn to her after a shopkeeper gave a favorable report of her character and appearance. Their relationship didn’t work out, but what stands out is that Stuart began a letter to her by saying, “I am a young person of modest proportions,” highlighting his self-awareness.
Many readers have expressed confusion and concern over this detail. One user, u/MattheJ1, commented, “If I were Mr. Little, I’d be asking some questions.” This sentiment reflects the broader curiosity and surprise surrounding the true nature of Stuart Little.
