Strangely Hungry for More After ‘Massive’ Lessons

A Promising Start for Ethan Strange

Ethan Strange, a 21-year-old five-eighth, has made a significant impact in his State of Origin debut, and he credits his success to one key factor: his main selection rival. His standout performance helped New South Wales overcome Queensland with a score of 22-20 in the series opener last Wednesday. This impressive display has sparked discussions about whether Strange should be the starting No. 6 for game two at the MCG on June 17.

Strange was only called into the starting line-up after first-choice five-eighth Mitchell Moses suffered a hamstring injury during training. Despite this unexpected opportunity, Strange is grateful for the support from his teammates, particularly Moses and halfback Nathan Cleary, who have played a crucial role in his successful debut.

“Moey (Moses) and Nathan are massive. Whenever I ask questions, they are always there to help me out, and they’ve got such smart football brains, so they never make it feel like it’s a burden when I’m asking,” Strange said. “Just the way they see the game, they’ve obviously got experience and are some of the best halves in the game. Just even watching them at training, and the way they do things, and go about their work is (inspirational).”

After experiencing the intensity of the Origin cauldron, Strange is eager to return and prove himself once again. A solid performance in the Raiders’ 26-12 victory over North Queensland on Sunday could further strengthen his case for the five-eighth jersey. However, he is aware that retaining the position will be challenging, especially since coach Laurie Daley has hinted that Moses might reclaim his starting spot. Meanwhile, Parramatta coach Jason Ryles remains hopeful that Moses can return for the Eels clash against Canterbury next Monday.

Strange is determined to focus on his performance rather than the surrounding noise. At just 21 years old, he acknowledges that there is still a lot for him to learn about the game. He plans to continue working hard for Canberra, training diligently, and learning from Moses and Cleary whenever he gets the chance to play.

“I’m only 21 years old, so I’ve definitely still got a lot to learn about the game of footy,” he said. “I’ve just got to keep trying hard for Canberra and training hard, and when I get in there, just being a sponge off those two boys, Moey and Nathan.”

Another major selection decision is looming for coach Laurie Daley following hooker Blayke Brailey’s injury, as he fractured his right arm against Manly last Friday night. Tom Starling, the Raiders’ No. 9, has been in outstanding form, showcasing his passion and dedication to the game. Strange believes that Starling deserves the opportunity to step up.

“Starlo (Starling) is in outstanding form. He has passion and everything for the game,” he said. “If he was there, he would kill it.”
