The hidden nighttime sign of burnout a psychologist warns about

Understanding Burnout and Its Impact on Sleep

Burnout, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is an “occupational phenomenon” that can leave individuals feeling exhausted, cynical, and less effective at work. This condition is believed to affect a significant portion of the workforce, with estimates suggesting that up to 65% of workers in the UK may experience it. However, some symptoms of burnout are often overlooked or dismissed as normal stress.

Dr Bijal Chheda, a psychologist from Nos Curare, highlights that one such symptom is nighttime overthinking. She explains that struggling to switch off at night can be a subtle indicator of burnout. Individuals might find their minds replaying the day’s events or jumping ahead to tasks for the next day, which are signs of insomnia.

The Link Between Burnout and Insomnia

Research suggests that insomnia involves a specific type of rumination, often centered around worries about how one will feel the next day. A 2017 study found that among finance workers, job strain was only a risk factor for burnout if it was accompanied by insomnia. Another study indicated that burnout and insomnia can predict each other’s development and intensification over time.

Dr Chheda notes that these two conditions can form a vicious cycle. When stress accumulates, it becomes harder for the brain to fully switch off, leading to poor sleep cycles. This can result in mental exhaustion and patterns that are difficult to break.

Strategies to Improve Sleep and Manage Burnout

If you experience these symptoms, Dr Chheda recommends starting a wind-down routine half an hour before bedtime. Creating a calming environment is essential. This includes switching off harsh overhead lights to reduce stimulation and using warmer lighting to signal to your brain that it’s time to relax.

Instead of engaging in activities like doomscrolling, she suggests gentle stretches, listening to music, or reading. These activities send a clear message to the brain that it’s time to switch off.

If sleep issues persist, it’s important to consult a medical professional. They can provide further guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.
