The Proposed Trump Bridge in Louisiana Faces Setbacks
A legislative proposal to name a bridge over the Mississippi River after former President Donald Trump has encountered significant obstacles in Louisiana. The bill, which aimed to rename a proposed bridge connecting Highway 30 and Highway 1 as the “President Donald J. Trump Expressway,” was introduced by Republican state Representative Michael Echols. If passed, it would have added another piece of infrastructure bearing Trump’s name.
The legislation included a directive for the Department of Transportation and Development or its contractors to install and maintain appropriate signage once the bridge is completed. However, despite passing the House with a vote of 68–26 in March, the bill never received a Senate vote or even a committee referral before the legislative session ended on June 1.
Echols, who is running for the U.S. House in Louisiana’s new 5th Congressional District, claimed that GOP state Senate President Cameron Henry informed him the bill would not move forward. According to Echols, he consulted with Trump, who reportedly said the Senate was not interested in naming bridges and roads after presidents at that time.
Echols argued that naming the project after Trump could help secure federal funding and support for the long-standing infrastructure initiative. He expressed disappointment, stating, “I think it was a unique opportunity to advance a huge project that’s been on the books for decades.”
A Parallel Effort for Obama
In contrast, a separate bill proposed by Democratic state Representative Pat Moore sought to name a section of Louisiana Highway 15 as the “President Barack Obama Road.” This bill advanced through the committee phase but also failed to receive a floor vote.
Louisiana, part of the Deep South, has traditionally been a Republican stronghold. In the 2024 election, about 60% of voters supported Trump, while 38% voted for Kamala Harris.

Trump’s Infrastructure Naming Campaign
Since returning to power last year, Trump has had several infrastructure projects named in his honor, although these efforts have faced opposition. In December, the White House announced that the U.S. Institute of Peace would be renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. Similarly, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was rebranded as the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
However, a federal judge ruled that the name change to the Kennedy Center was illegal, stating that the board had overstepped its authority. The judge emphasized that such decisions must come from Congress. Following this ruling, Trump criticized the judge, suggesting they should be “brought up on charges.”
Florida’s Airport Renaming Legislation
In March, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation allowing the state to rename seven major airports, including the Palm Beach International Airport, which will now be called “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” This move has already led to multiple lawsuits. One lawsuit, filed by a pilot, argues that the name change could create safety risks and confusion for pilots and air traffic controllers.
Critics have also raised concerns that Trump’s family might benefit financially from the rebranding. Before DeSantis signed the law, the Trump family company filed to trademark the airport name. According to reports, the family will not profit from branded goods sold within the airport but could sell merchandise elsewhere for a profit.
Eric Trump has denied any financial gain, stating on X: “The agreement clearly states that in no event will Licensor, Trump, or any affiliate or entity we have an economic interest in or receive any royalties, fees, or revenue from the purchase or sale of any Airport Merchandise.”
