Exclusive: Why The Traitors Australia Could Be ‘Dead’ if New Season Fails

The Return of The Traitors in Australia

After being discontinued in 2023, The Traitors is making a triumphant return to Australia, promising chaos, betrayal, and a whole lot of drama. This reality TV show has gained global popularity, especially after the success of Celebrity Traitors UK, where celebrities were seen lying to each other while completing outrageous challenges in a Cluedo-style mansion.

This season will feature a group of reality TV stars from popular shows such as Survivor, The Bachelor, MasterChef, MAFS, Love Island, and Big Brother. These contestants will be locked in a house together, playing a game similar to mafia, with three “Traitors” secretly working to eliminate the “Faithful” contestants without being discovered.

If you enjoy camp outfits, betrayal, strategy, and deception, this is the show for you. The upcoming season will be hosted by Gretel Killeen, who recently competed in the 2025 season of The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition. She is replacing Roger Corser, who hosted the first two seasons of The Traitors Australia.

Why The Traitors is Making a Comeback

According to media commentator and content creator Rob McKnight, the return of The Traitors in Australia is due to the cultural influence of the UK’s celebrity version. He explained that the format works well because it doesn’t rely on over manipulation, creating palpable tension at every elimination.

McKnight noted that the audience is cheering for people who are lying to others, which is good TV when viewers go against their natural instincts of fair play. He also highlighted that the success of the UK version led Channel 10 to bring the format back for another try, as it had previously struggled to connect with Australian audiences.

When Will The Traitors Australia Premiere?

Channel 10 recently released the trailer for the upcoming season, announcing it will air in August. Gretel Killeen is expected to bring her signature camp chaos to the show. In a statement released by Channel 10, she said, “Darlings, I have only three tips for these deluded ‘individuals’ as they come to play in my mischievous mansion. Leave your good self at home and pack the naughty you, give yourself permission to feel good being bad, and never forget that although you may win the money, I will always win the game.”

Inside Channel 10’s Big Celebrity Gamble

McKnight believes that including celebrities in this upcoming season is a strong move by Channel 10. He stated, “This season needs to work, or the format is dead in this country.” He also praised the decision to cast Gretel Killeen as the host, saying she should have been the host from the start.

“Surrounding Gretel with celebrities makes sense to give it the best shot of success,” he added. “Going forward, the show can go back to ‘normal’ Aussies, but 10 needs to throw everything at this upcoming season.”

The Psychology of The Traitors Format

While McKnight doesn’t believe The Traitors will compete with the likes of Married at First Sight, he does think its dynamics have an “addictive” format that could lead to long-term success. He explained that the psychology of the game plays a big part, with the focus on the traitors hiding their identity and how far they are willing to go to do that.

“Every season brings a new dynamic. A new group of people means each season plays out very differently. While personalities can obviously change each season of a reality show, this game goes further because of the manipulation and psychological warfare,” he added.

How to Watch The Traitors Australia

The Traitors Australia will be available to watch in August on Channel 10 or 10play. Fans can look forward to a new season filled with betrayal, strategy, and high-stakes drama.
