India-Australia Bilateral: Deputy PM Hails Player Over Hazlewood After RCB’s IPL Triumph

A New Chapter in India-Australia Cricket Relations

After the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) successfully retained the IPL trophy in 2026, a notable shift occurred in the relationship between India and Australia. This change was highlighted by the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Richard Marles, who was in India for an event called “Manoval.” During his visit, Marles expressed his admiration for one of India’s most iconic cricketers, Virat Kohli.

Australia has long been known for its deep appreciation of Indian cricket, and Marles is no exception to this trend. While discussing RCB’s successful campaign in the tournament, he emphasized that the match had a strong bilateral theme between the two nations. Although RCB had two key Australian players, Tim David and Josh Hazlewood, Marles found himself particularly drawn to Kohli’s performance, especially his unbeaten 75* in the final.

Speaking to the Asian News International (ANI), Marles reflected on the significance of the event:

“When I was here last year, it was the morning after the final of the Indian Premier League, as it is, of course, this morning. Last night, as we saw a year ago, we saw RCB triumph.”

He continued:

“But I like the fact that Virat Kohli was 75* and was man of the match, but alongside him were Josh Hazlewood and Tim David. So there was very much an Australian-Indian bilateral theme at play last night as RCB won the IPL.”

Marles also shared his thoughts on how popular Virat Kohli is in Australia, while acknowledging the legacy of another legendary Indian cricketer from the past. He specifically mentioned Bishan Bedi, the Indian captain during his formative years.

“Virat Kohli is a huge name in Australia right now, but as I grew up, the very first Indian cricket captain I remember was Bishan Bedi; they were the great names of that era.”

The 2026 IPL Final: A Thrilling Encounter

The 2026 IPL final between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was a nail-biting contest that ended with RCB lifting the trophy. In a thrilling finish, RCB defeated GT by five wickets, securing their victory with 12 balls remaining in Ahmedabad.

Chasing a target of 156, RCB managed to reach 161/5 in 18 overs. Their success was largely driven by Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten throughout the innings. His 75 off 42 balls featured nine fours and three sixes, showcasing his brilliance under pressure. Venkatesh Iyer contributed with 32 from 16 balls, while Tim David added 24 runs.

Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, posted a total of 155/8, thanks to Washington Sundar’s unbeaten 50 off 37 balls. Rasikh Salam was instrumental with 3/27, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood each took two wickets. Rashid Khan provided crucial support with 2/25, but it wasn’t enough to prevent RCB from clinching the title.

A Growing Bond Between Two Cricketing Nations

The 2026 IPL final not only marked a significant moment in Indian cricket history but also highlighted the growing bond between India and Australia. With players like Tim David and Josh Hazlewood playing pivotal roles, the match symbolized a deeper connection between the two nations.

Marles’ comments further emphasized the mutual respect and admiration that exists between the two countries. As Australia continues to engage with Indian cricket, it becomes clear that the relationship is evolving beyond just sport, touching on cultural and diplomatic ties as well.
