Serena Williams’ Surprise Return to Tennis Sparks Excitement
Wimbledon board member Tim Henman has spoken about the potential for Serena Williams to be given a wildcard entry into the grass-court grand slam following her recent announcement of a return to tennis. The 44-year-old, who stepped away from professional tennis in 2022, never used the word “retirement” when she left the sport, which has led to speculation about her possible comeback.
Rumours about Serena’s return began circulating in December after she re-entered the official drug testing pool. At the time, she denied any plans to come back, but on Tuesday, she confirmed that she will be playing in the Queen’s tournament next week.
Serena has already been granted a wildcard into the women’s doubles at Queen’s, where she will partner with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. In a statement, Williams expressed her excitement about returning to the court. “Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” she said. “Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
If Serena wants to play at Wimbledon later this month, she would also need a wildcard. There is a popular theory that she is aiming to play doubles with her sister Venus, who is still active at the age of 45.

Tim Henman Comments on Serena Williams’ Comeback
During an interview on Tuesday, Henman discussed the situation and mentioned that there will be a wildcard meeting on June 15, where Serena’s future in the tournament is likely to be decided. Henman expressed his enthusiasm for Serena’s return, indicating his positive stance on the matter.
“So exciting. She is one of – if not the – greatest female player of all time,” Henman said on TNT Sports. “She’s been out of the game. She’s 44 years of age and to still have the passion and the hunger and desire to get back out on the court.
“It’s huge for the sport, it’s great for the grass court season, and I think when she stepped back into the drug testing pool then it was pretty obvious she was going to play at some stage. Very exciting for Queen’s and everyone that’s going to be there.
“I’m purely speculating here, as you can imagine. If she is going to play at Queen’s then you would have thought that the motivation is to get ready for Wimbledon. I don’t know whether she is going to play singles [at Wimbledon]. The wildcard meeting is June 15th, so it’s amazing to have her back at Queen’s.”
John McEnroe’s Reaction to Serena’s Return
American legend John McEnroe expressed his surprise at Serena’s return, calling it a “semi-shocked” moment. However, he added that the “logical next step” for her would be to enter the singles draw at Wimbledon. “She’s not coming back as ‘I’m happy to play and it’s fun’ – she wants to go win another major,” he said on TNT. “That’s the only reason that I can think that Serena Williams will want to play tennis again.”
Impact on the Tennis World
Serena’s announcement became the main topic of discussion in the tennis world on Tuesday. It came during the French Open, with some matches being overshadowed by the news of her return.
Her decision to make a comeback has generated a lot of excitement among fans and players alike. Whether she will compete in singles or doubles at Wimbledon remains to be seen, but her presence at Queen’s has already made a significant impact on the grass-court season.
