God of War Laufey: A New Chapter in the Norse Saga
At the PlayStation State of Play event, Santa Monica Studio unveiled a new spinoff titled God of War Laufey. This game is set parallel to the 2018 Norse saga and introduces a fresh narrative that explores the journey of Faye through the afterlife realm known as Everywhen.
While Kratos remains a central figure in the God of War franchise, director Ariel Lawrence emphasized that this entry focuses on Faye’s story. She explained that the decision to highlight Faye was not about replacing Kratos but rather about delving into a character who had significantly influenced the Norse saga from the shadows.
“We’ll always tell stories about Kratos, but I think for us, it was just a chance to talk about somebody who was so pivotal to the beginning,” Lawrence said in an interview.

“To get to know them and push beyond into this new world, and give us some place to be surprised and see how things connect. So for us, it’s not a departure; it’s more of an expansion,” she added.
God of War Laufey begins immediately after Faye’s body is burned on the funeral pyre depicted at the start of 2018’s God of War. The story unfolds in parallel with the events of God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök.
In this parallel timeline, Faye awakens in the Everywhen, the afterlife realm for gods. Here, she discovers that the plans she set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus may be in danger.
Santa Monica Studio’s Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, confirmed that all events in Laufey run alongside the Norse saga and directly connect to the broader universe.
The Intriguing Realm of Everywhen
One of the most captivating aspects of God of War Laufey is the Everywhen. This realm serves as the birthplace and endpoint of all magic. It is not only a part of Norse legends but also brings together gods and creatures from various mythologies.
This means that Faye will encounter the Egyptian deity Sekhmet and the Mongolian war god Begtse during her journey. This suggests that Santa Monica Studio is expanding its scope beyond a single mythological setting.
In addition to these encounters, two unique companions will join Faye on her quest. One is a cosmic cube named Phranque, and the other is Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian.
New Gameplay Mechanics
The gameplay in God of War Laufey introduces new elements that differ from previous installments. Unlike the heavier combat style seen in earlier games, Faye relies on speed, agility, aerial movement, and soul-based magic.
This shift in gameplay mechanics offers players a fresh experience while staying true to the core themes of the God of War series.
Expanding the God of War Universe
With the introduction of the Everywhen and its diverse cast of characters, God of War Laufey has the potential to reshape the future of the franchise. By incorporating elements from multiple mythologies, Santa Monica Studio is opening up new possibilities for storytelling and exploration within the God of War universe.
As the game continues to develop, fans can expect a rich and immersive experience that expands on the legacy of the original series while introducing new characters and settings.
