John Travolta Honours Late Wife and Son in Directorial Debut: ‘Life Has Tested Me’

A New Chapter in John Travolta’s Life

John Travolta, the iconic actor known for his roles in films like Grease, has taken a significant step in his career by directing his first film. This project, Propeller: One-Way Night Coach, is not just a professional milestone but also a deeply personal tribute to his late wife, Kelly Preston, and their son, Jett Travolta.

Travolta, now 72, shared that both Preston and Jett were the inspiration behind the film. He described them as the “blueprint” for the feature, which is based on a book he published in 1997. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, he expressed how his family shaped the story of the film.

“They are the model from which this film was born,” he said. “Life has certainly tested me, [but my] nature is to look for the positive, even in the face of the worst.”

He added, “I’m not made to remain absorbed in the darkness. I can look at the darkness, but I don’t choose to die in that darkness.”

A Family’s Tragic Loss

Kelly Preston passed away in 2020 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. She was 57 years old. The couple had been married for nearly 29 years, tying the knot in September 1991 and remaining together until her death in July 2020.

They had three children together: Ella Bleu, 26, Benjamin, 15, and Jett, who died at the age of 16 in 2006. Jett was the couple’s eldest child and passed away while on a family holiday in the Bahamas. He suffered a seizure that caused him to hit his head on a bathtub inside the Old Bahama Bay Hotel.

Jett had autism, asthma, and Kawasaki Syndrome. His passing was a devastating loss for the family, and it clearly influenced Travolta’s creative process in making this film.

A Semi-Autobiographical Project

Travolta took on multiple roles in the film, including writing, directing, narrating, and acting. His daughter also stars in the movie, adding another layer of personal connection to the project.

According to IMDb, the 61-minute feature film tells the story of a “young aviation enthusiast Jeff and his mother on a cross-country flight to Hollywood that transforms into a life-changing journey filled with unexpected moments.”

A Success on Screen

The film recently reached a major milestone when it topped Apple TV’s top 10 films. Travolta celebrated the achievement on Instagram, expressing his pride in the project.

“I’m really really proud of it,” he said in the video. “I have to thank you because it’s all because of you guys.”

His post received a lot of support from fans and fellow celebrities. Tommy Lee wrote, “OF COURSE IT DID!!! That was the most endearing movie I’ve seen in a LONGTIME John! Thank you again for sharing your story with us.” Goldie Hawn commented, “Congratulations sweetheart! Just so awesome!!!!”

The film reportedly received a standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, highlighting its impact and emotional depth.

A Legacy of Love and Resilience

Through Propeller: One-Way Night Coach, John Travolta has created a powerful tribute to his family, blending personal history with cinematic storytelling. The film reflects his ability to find hope and positivity even in the darkest times, a testament to his enduring love for Kelly and Jett.
