Tana Umaga’s Honest Take on Reviving the All Blacks Jersey

Coach Tana Umaga’s Vision for the All Blacks

Coach Tana Umaga has set a clear objective: to restore the “shine” to the iconic All Blacks jersey under the leadership of new head coach Dave Rennie. A revered figure in New Zealand rugby, Umaga captained the team over 20 times during his playing career and has now returned to the coaching setup after two decades away. His return comes as part of a significant change in the All Blacks’ management, following the departure of Scott Robertson, who was replaced by Rennie in January.

The appointment of Rennie, a former Wallabies boss, has been met with optimism within New Zealand. Umaga, who is now serving as the team’s defensive strategist, has expressed confidence in Rennie’s ability to rejuvenate the All Blacks and bring them back to their former glory.

The Influence of Rennie and Savea

Umaga highlighted the importance of Rennie’s leadership, noting that every team he has coached has shown remarkable performance. He described Rennie as a key figure who fosters a sense of belonging and legacy among players.

“Rens is huge, and every team he’s been a part of, what I’ve heard and what you’ve seen about how they perform, all of them talk around how great he is at making players feel like they’re part of history – they’re not just there on the ride,” Umaga said during an interview with Sky Sport NZ’s The Breakdown show.

He emphasized the importance of engagement, understanding one’s identity, and contributing to the legacy of the All Blacks. However, he also stressed that ultimately, it’s about performing on the field.

Ardie Savea’s Role

Umaga also pointed to the crucial role of Ardie Savea, a player he knows well from their time together at Moana Pasifika. Savea played a significant part in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, acting as a source of inspiration for the team.

“With Ards especially, he’s such an empathetic person, he feels what the players are feeling and he’s a good voice for the players,” Umaga explained.

He noted that young players often hesitate to speak up, but it’s essential to adapt and ensure their voices are heard in the way they prefer. At the same time, it’s important to maintain the team’s identity and values.

Preparing for the Challenges Ahead

As the All Blacks prepare for the upcoming Nations Championship, there is still a month to go before Rennie’s tenure truly begins. The team will face France, followed by matches against Italy and Ireland. The real challenge will come when they tour South Africa as part of The Greatest Rivalry series, which includes four Tests against the Springboks.

Umaga has made it clear that the ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup. However, the pressure will be immense if results and performances do not meet expectations. He wants to restore the aura of fear that the All Blacks once commanded, bringing back the shine to their jersey.

“The ultimate goal is winning the World Cup, that’s why we’re in it, but as we know, within New Zealand we’re also expected to win every Test,” Umaga added.

“As a fan of the All Blacks, we’ve probably lost a bit of our shine. I want to start rubbing that jersey a bit and bring the shine back to it.”

Looking Ahead

With the right strategy and leadership, the All Blacks have the potential to reclaim their status as one of the most feared teams in world rugby. As they prepare for the challenges ahead, the focus remains on unity, performance, and the pursuit of excellence. The journey to restore the All Blacks’ legacy is just beginning, and the path forward will require dedication, resilience, and a deep connection to the team’s rich history.
