Understanding European Airline Hand Luggage Restrictions
Whether you’re planning a city break to Berlin, a cultural escape to Dubrovnik, or a long weekend in Mallorca, chances are you’ll be carrying hand luggage. However, with European airline restrictions becoming more stringent than ever, it’s essential to plan ahead. The key is finding the right balance between maximizing your carry-on space and avoiding extra fees at the gate.
While the best packing cubes can help, the size of your bag plays a crucial role. Every European airline has its own set of rules, which can often change. For instance, Ryanair, known for its strict policies, recently reduced the dimensions of its ‘small personal bag’ to just 40cm x 30cm x 20cm. On the other hand, British Airways offers both a personal bag and a carry-on case as part of its ticket, a policy also followed by KLM, Norwegian, Iberia, and Air France.
Wizz Air only allows a small underseat bag, while EasyJet offers a slightly larger personal bag. Upgrading your ticket to include a larger carry-on bag is an option, but it’s always cheaper to do so ahead of time rather than at the airport.
Antonio Shabbir from EasyJet’s customer service team explains, “Having a clear policy for cabin bags makes the boarding process faster and more efficient for customers by reducing potential delays and inconvenience for passengers caused by needing to offload extra bags and stowing them in the hold, if there isn’t room for them onboard. There are a number of factors that inform this, including space on board and weight limits to align with safety and industry standards.”
With summer 2026 trips approaching, here’s your full guide to European airlines’ hand luggage restrictions, along with recommendations for the best bags to buy.
