Surf-Style Luxury in Torquay’s New Hotel

A New Era for Torquay’s Coastal Scene

Torquay, often celebrated as Australia’s surf capital, is known for its exceptional and varied surf breaks, along with consistent swells that attract surfers from around the world. Once a quiet beach town, it has grown significantly over the years, with its population nearly doubling from 10,000 in 2011 to an estimated 26,000 to 29,500 today. This coastal gem remains a popular holiday destination, drawing visitors not only for its world-class beaches but also for its lively hospitality scene.

A new accommodation option has recently opened, capturing the essence of Torquay’s surfing culture and offering a blend of retro charm and modern design.

A Revitalized Space with a Nostalgic Touch

The Surf Hotel is the first project by Melbourne-based hospitality and property developers Jack Davis and George Robinson. It represents a transformation of an ’80s motel into a stylish seaside retreat. The property was reimagined by Melbourne-based architects Forum Studio and interior designers Pasquale Cook, located on Torquay’s beachfront main strip, The Esplanade.

Each space within the hotel reflects a warm, earthy palette while paying tribute to the building’s ’80s origins. Features include cork floors, record players with vinyl curated by Torquay’s J Wray Records, and bespoke belly boards created exclusively by Rip Curl co-founder Doug Warbirck. The walls are adorned with Kodachrome photos taken by renowned Australian surf photographers.

A Unique Stay for Surfers and Design Enthusiasts

The hotel offers just 16 rooms and suites, all designed with warm minimalism in mind. For those seeking added luxury, the suites feature freestanding circular bathtubs under custom skylights. However, the standout choice is the penthouse, which can accommodate up to eight guests across four rooms. It boasts sweeping ocean views and an entertainer’s kitchen perfect for hosting gatherings.

Dining with a Coastal Twist

The hotel’s restaurant and bar are led by Jo Barrett, who was named Chef of the Year in the 2024 Australian Good Food Guide. Her approach to gastronomy focuses on closed-loop practices, highlighting local produce against the backdrop of the Bass Strait. The menu features modern bites such as an elevated fish finger sandwich, chicken and prawn larb with lime, chilli and fish sauce, fried king oyster mushroom with cashew and aged fenugreek, and sweet treats like rice pudding cream with plum and finger lime. The dining area includes a wood-burning fireplace, ideal for cozy evenings during the cooler months.

Expansive Views and Wellness Amenities

The penthouse offers breathtaking sea views, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and enjoyment. In the coming months, the hotel will introduce a wellness space featuring a timber sauna, cold plunge, and loungers, enhancing the guest experience further.

Community-Focused Development

Surf Hotel exemplifies a thoughtful development that aims to enrich the community rather than simply exist within it. Davis and Robinson’s second project, The Roy at Rainbow Beach in Queensland, is set to open later this month, continuing their commitment to creating meaningful spaces.
