A Historic Moment in ODI Cricket
In November last year, the Pakistan Men’s Cricket team made a significant decision by handing over the captaincy to their star fast bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi. This move marked a new chapter for the team, and today, Afridi is leading his side against Australia in the second ODI match held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first. From the very first ball of the match, Afridi showcased his exceptional skills by dismissing Alex Carey for a golden duck. The delivery was full and wide, pitched outside the off stump, and it stopped slightly on the surface before shaping away. Carey, attempting an expansive shot, tried to slash or cut the ball toward the square region. However, the ball caught a thick inside edge off his bat and crashed directly back onto the stumps, resulting in a clean dismissal.
This moment placed Afridi among the elite list of Pakistani captains who have taken wickets on the first ball of an ODI match. The list includes only two other names: Wasim Akram, who dismissed Andy Flower in 1993, and Waqar Younis, who dismissed Marcus Trescothick in 2001.
Pakistani Captains Who Took Wickets on the First Ball of an ODI Match
- Wasim Akram – Andy Flower (Zimbabwe, Karachi, December 24, 1993)
- Waqar Younis – Marcus Trescothick (England, Leeds, June 17, 2001)
- Shaheen Shah Afridi – Alex Carey (Australia, Lahore, June 2, 2026)
A Legacy of Excellence
Shaheen’s achievement places him in the company of some of Pakistan’s greatest cricketing legends. Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan made history in 1985 by becoming the first Pakistani to claim a wicket with the opening ball of an ODI, dismissing Ravi Shastri and finishing with 6/14. Decades later, Shaheen Afridi joined this elite group, becoming the third Pakistani bowler to record first-ball ODI wickets multiple times.

As the match progresses, fans will be eagerly watching to see how Afridi continues to lead his team and whether he can maintain this momentum throughout the series. With such a strong foundation, the future looks bright for the Pakistan Men’s Cricket team.
