Pathum Nissanka’s Decision to Withdraw from LPL 2026
Pathum Nissanka, the prominent opener for Sri Lanka, has decided to step away from the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 due to ongoing hand issues. The league is scheduled to begin on July 19, but Nissanka has chosen to take a break from cricket to ensure he returns in full fitness for his national responsibilities.
Over the past 12 months, Nissanka has been involved in an intense cricketing schedule, participating in both international matches and franchise competitions such as the IPL 2026. With the pressure set to increase further, the Sri Lankan batsman has determined that his immediate focus should be on addressing his injury and undergoing proper rehabilitation.
Prioritizing Health Over Professional Commitments
Although Nissanka was not directly selected as a signing for the LPL 2026, he remained eligible to be picked by various franchises. However, it has now been confirmed that he will not be part of the event. This decision aims to provide him with enough time to recover without any complications in the future.
Nissanka is expected to undergo hand surgery during the first week of July. His management believes that taking a break at this moment will allow him to return stronger and ready for Sri Lanka’s crucial phase of international cricket.
Asanka Wijewardena, Nissanka’s manager, stated:
“Playing for Sri Lanka is our prime goal, so we decided that this will be the phase to recuperate properly before the critical series against India and England.”
A Stellar Performance in IPL 2026
Despite his fitness challenges, Nissanka delivered an impressive debut season in the IPL 2026 after being signed by the Delhi Capitals for a bid of 4 crore. He played 10 games and scored 278 runs with a strike rate of 158.86, including two half-centuries. This performance made him the second-highest run-scorer for the Delhi Capitals in the season.
His highest score of 62 came off just 33 balls against the Rajasthan Royals. His quick hitting at the top of the order provided strong platforms for the Delhi Capitals during the league stage.
Impressive International Record
Since making his international debut in 2021, Nissanka has established himself as one of the most reliable batters for Sri Lanka across all formats of the game.
In Test cricket, he has accumulated 1,305 runs at an average of 45.00 in 18 matches, including four centuries and seven fifties. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has scored 2,920 runs at a 40.56 average in 77 games, with seven centuries and 18 fifties.
His T20I record is equally impressive, with 91 games played and 2,648 runs scored at a strike rate of 128.67, including two centuries and 19 half-centuries.
Looking Ahead
With the crucial series against India and England on the horizon, Sri Lanka will be hoping that their star opener recovers fully and returns fit and ready to contribute. Nissanka’s decision to prioritize his health is a strategic move that could significantly benefit the team in the long run.
