‘Lot to Achieve’: Vidmar Extends City Stay

New Contract for Aurelio Vidmar at Melbourne City

Melbourne City has announced the renewal of its coaching contract with Aurelio Vidmar, who will continue to lead the team for the next two years. This decision marks a significant step in the club’s ongoing development and reflects confidence in Vidmar’s vision and leadership.

Vidmar, a former Socceroo, has been at the helm of Melbourne City since November 2023. His tenure has already seen several milestones, including the club’s first A-League title in the 2025 season. Additionally, the team made history by reaching the knockout stages of the 2025-26 AFC Champions League Elite competition, a feat that highlights the growing ambition of the club on the international stage.

Despite the recent setback in the A-League finals series, where Melbourne City was eliminated in a penalty shootout by Auckland FC, Vidmar remains focused on future goals. “There’s still a lot we want to achieve, and I’m excited to continue that journey with everyone at the club,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of developing young talent within the club. “We’ve achieved some important milestones over the past few seasons. Just as importantly, we’ve continued to provide opportunities for young players to develop and progress to the highest level, while also seeing so many of our players earn national team selection across multiple age groups.”

Michael Petrillo, the director of football at Melbourne City, praised Vidmar for his contributions to the club’s evolution. “Aurelio has done an excellent job leading the team through a period that has included championship success domestically, very strong performances in Asia and importantly, the continued development of young talent.”

Petrillo emphasized the significance of Vidmar’s achievements, such as winning the A-League championship, reaching the AFC Champions League Elite knockout stages for the first time in club history, and extending the record run of finals series appearances to 12. “What has impressed us most is his ability to maintain high standards while balancing the demands of competing across multiple competitions and continuing to develop the next generation of talent.”

Brad Rowse, the chief executive of Melbourne City, described Vidmar as an “outstanding leader.” He noted that Vidmar has helped create an environment where players can thrive. “Young players are given genuine opportunities and the team continues to compete at a high level,” Rowse said. “Aurelio understands who we are as a club, where we want to go and what it takes to represent Melbourne City.”

  • The 2025 A-League title, marking a historic achievement for the club
  • First-ever participation in the AFC Champions League Elite knockout stages
  • Extended the record of finals series appearances to 12 consecutive seasons

Vidmar’s contract extension underscores the club’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge and nurturing talent. With a strong foundation in place, Melbourne City looks forward to building on its successes under his leadership in the coming seasons.
