Will Jacks Expresses Disappointment Over Missing England’s Test Squad
All-rounder Will Jacks has voiced his disappointment at not being included in England’s Test squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand, which begins on Thursday, June 4, at Lord’s Cricket Ground. At 27 years old, Jacks had recently returned to the red-ball setup in preparation for the 2025-26 Ashes, but now finds himself sidelined as the Three Lions move forward in the longest format of the game.
Jacks played in four out of five Test matches during the tour of Australia, stepping in as England’s primary spinner in place of Shoaib Bashir. However, he managed only six wickets at an average of 53.66, which contributed to his team’s 4-1 series defeat. With the bat, he scored 145 runs, averaging just 20.71.
Despite missing out on the New Zealand Test series, Jacks expressed immense pride in having represented his country during an away Ashes series. He is determined to work hard and earn his spot back in the squad led by Ben Stokes.
“Obviously the Ashes was something I didn’t expect to be a part of and I’m so grateful to be given that opportunity. I think when I look back at the end of my career playing four tests in and away Ashes is something I’ll be most proud of. But you always want to achieve more. Obviously disappointed not to be given the opportunity to be in the test squad this time. But that’s something that I won’t stop working towards and hopefully get back into at some stage,” Jacks said on TalkSPORT.
A Career Focused on International Matches
Interestingly, Jacks has yet to play a Test match on home turf. Of the six matches he has participated in throughout his career, two were in Pakistan and four took place in Australia.
Even though he didn’t get to play in any Ashes Test matches, England has continued to back Bashir, who remains in the squad for the series against the Black Caps. The Three Lions have also brought Rehan Ahmed into the mix as their spinner, who can bat around the number eight position — something Jacks did during the Australian tour.
Recent Performances and Future Plans
Recently, Jacks played for the Mumbai Indians in the 2026 Indian Premier League, where he appeared in seven matches, scoring 139 runs and taking two wickets. He’s already back in England and has played two matches for Surrey in the T20 Blast.
