Rutshire Rocked by Tragedy as “Rivals” Season 2 Delivers Shocking Mid-Season Finale
The first six episodes of Rivals season 2 have been a whirlwind of escalating rivalries, tested loyalties, and broken hearts, all set against the glamorous and cutthroat world of the Rutshire elite. However, the mid-season break arrived with a devastating twist that has left the characters, and viewers, reeling. The synopsis for the season promised that “as rivalries push everyone to the brink, loyalties are tested and hearts are broken in the pursuit of victory. But what is the true cost of war?” This question has been answered in the most tragic way imaginable.
The series, inspired by the beloved novels of the late Dame Jilly Cooper, who sadly passed away in October, delves deep into the complex relationships and simmering tensions within the Rutshire community. Fans will have to endure a period of waiting before discovering the full ramifications of the dramatic events that unfolded in episode six.
A Storm Brews in Rutshire: Episode Six Unpacked
The latest instalment, season 2 episode 6, brought both literal and metaphorical storms to Rutshire. The long-rumoured affair between Tony Baddingham (played by David Tennant) and Maud O’Hara (Victoria Smurfit) was dramatically exposed. The discovery came when Tony’s son, Archie Baddingham (Louis Landau), and Maud’s daughter, Caitlin O’Hara (Catriona Chandler), stumbled upon explicit photographs of their parents together, developed from Tony’s camera.
The fallout from this revelation was swift. Monica Baddingham (Claire Rushbrook) returned home to a tense atmosphere, only to find out that Archie and Caitlin had skipped school to be together. While Caitlin attempted to conceal the developed film, Monica ultimately discovered the damning evidence of her husband’s infidelity.

Dinner at the Baddingham residence transformed into a confrontational scene. Archie, visibly upset, confronted his father, questioning why his mother seemed to be tolerating the situation. This confrontation led to Monica’s departure.
Escaping into the stormy night, Monica sought out Lizzie Vereker (Katherine Parkinson). In a candid conversation, Monica probed Lizzie about her own affair with Freddie Jones (Danny Dyer) and her intentions regarding her marriage to James Vereker (Oliver Chris).

The two women found common ground, questioning their tolerance of their husbands’ adulterous behaviour and their desire to set better examples for their daughters. Monica confided in Lizzie about a past love she had to abandon due to her mother’s disapproval before marrying Tony.
Later, Monica returned home, resolute, and informed Tony of her decision: she wanted a divorce. She then prepared to drive Caitlin home to the O’Haras. Tony, in a panic, called Maud to warn her that Monica and Caitlin were on their way, now aware of the affair.

However, the journey took a terrifying turn. As time passed and Monica and Caitlin failed to arrive at the O’Haras’, Declan O’Hara (Aidan Turner) and Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) launched a search. They eventually found an injured Caitlin, who, when asked about her mother’s whereabouts, could only point in the direction of the crashed car.
The season’s first half concluded with a heartbreaking scene. Rupert visited Tony Baddingham to deliver the devastating news: Monica had tragically died when a tree fell onto her car. A grief-stricken Tony collapsed into Rupert’s arms.

When Will “Rivals” Season 2 Return?
Fans will need to hold on for a few months, as Rivals season 2 is set to resume with its second batch of six episodes in November. The series will be available on Disney+ in the UK and internationally, and on Hulu in the US.
What to Expect in the Second Half of the Season
A teaser trailer for the upcoming episodes has been released, offering a glimpse into the drama that lies ahead. The preview features scenes from Monica’s funeral, underscoring the profound impact of her death. Tony Baddingham, seemingly with nothing left to lose, is heard stating in a voiceover, “I’ve got nothing left to do but fight.”
The trailer also hints at developing relationships and escalating tensions:
* Lizzie and Freddie share longing glances while dancing with their respective spouses.
* Cameron Cook (Nafessa Williams) is seen with packed bags, suggesting a potential departure or a significant change.
* Paul Stratton (Rufus Jones) is shown punching James Vereker in the nose, indicating a violent confrontation.
* Rupert Campbell-Black’s jealousy is palpable as he watches Taggie O’Hara, dressed up, holding hands with Basil Baddingham (Luca Pasqualino). Rupert’s distress is so intense that he even breaks a glass while observing them.
Season one and the first six episodes of season two of Rivals are currently available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
