Josh Fraser’s Unlikely Path to Full-Time Coaching
Interim Carlton coach Josh Fraser has found himself in an unusual position. Despite being the man in charge during a crucial period for the club, he remains reluctant to consider the role on a full-time basis. This reluctance hasn’t stopped him from making a strong case for his continued involvement with the Blues.
Fraser has taken over as interim coach since Michael Voss left the club in May and has already achieved a perfect 5-0 record in his first five games. His leadership has been instrumental in turning around the team’s fortunes, which had dipped significantly before his appointment. However, when he first addressed the media after Voss’s departure, Fraser made it clear that he wasn’t interested in becoming the permanent coach.

“I haven’t,” Fraser said when asked if he was considering the full-time role. “Every club’s chasing on-field connection, and you’ve got to continue to find ways to do it differently. As a coaching group, we’re considering what we’re doing, we’re looking at finding different ways to challenge players. It’s something that every club chases, and the best clubs I’ve been at do it really well.”
Even though Fraser isn’t publicly seeking the job, there is a possibility that Carlton’s chief executive, Graham Wright, could convince him to be part of the process without formally applying. This suggests that while Fraser may not be actively pursuing the role, the club is keeping an open mind about his potential future with the team.
A Strong Start and Future Prospects
Carlton’s recent performance under Fraser has been impressive. The team started the season in 1-8 position when Voss left, but they have since shown significant improvement. If they can beat West Coast and Richmond in the next two weeks, they could secure a place in the AFL’s new 7-10 Wildcard spots.
This development has placed Carlton back in contention for a playoff spot, which was once thought to be out of reach. However, Fraser has remained focused on the immediate challenges ahead rather than the long-term implications.
“I’m sure this won’t come as a surprise when I say I haven’t even looked at that and I haven’t put the time and energy into that,” Fraser said. “I really like what West Coast are doing, and it’s important for us to set ourselves up well to go out and play and get a result. Nothing is given, we’ve got to make sure we do today really well.”
