Introduction to the 2026 Cupra Leon VZx Sportstourer
The 2026 Cupra Leon VZx Sportstourer is set to make its debut in Australia, with deliveries beginning in September 2026. This marks a significant milestone for the brand, as the performance wagon has been confirmed for the Australian market. The starting price of the vehicle is $67,490 before on-road costs, making it a strong contender in the high-performance wagon segment.
Powertrain and Performance
Joining the Leon VZe Sportstourer, which is a plug-in hybrid, the VZx Sportstourer shares its powertrain with the Volkswagen Golf R. However, it combines this powerful engine with the practicality of a wagon body. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivers an impressive 245kW of power and 420Nm of torque, sending this power to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
This setup allows the VZx to achieve a claimed 0-100km/h time of just 4.8 seconds, making it one of the fastest wagons available in the market. The vehicle also features torque vectoring technology, which can send up to 50 per cent of power to the rear axle, with 100 per cent of that power able to be directed to either of the rear wheels. This technology enhances cornering and exit speeds, providing a more dynamic driving experience.
Comparison with Competitors
The torque vectoring system found in the VZx is also present in the latest Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3. These models are priced from $71,990 and $78,800 before on-road costs, respectively. While these vehicles offer similar performance, the VZx stands out with its unique combination of power and practicality.
Despite being a wagon, the VZx offers 620 litres of boot space when the rear seats are in place. This is comparable to five-seater versions of the Hyundai Tucson and Mercedes-Benz GLE. However, the related Skoda Octavia RS wagon has around 20 litres more boot space and is cheaper at $64,990 drive-away. It’s worth noting, though, that the Skoda produces less power, with 195kW and 370Nm, and is front-wheel drive-only.
Optional Features and Customization
Like the Leon VZe, the VZx Sportstourer can be ordered with Cupra’s optional Extreme Pack. This package includes upgraded Akebono brakes, matrix LED headlights with graphic projection, and special sports bucket seats from Sabelt for the driver and front passenger. The Extreme Pack will cost an additional $7600, while a panoramic sunroof is available for an extra $2000. Matte paint is also an option, available for $2650.
These optional features allow customers to tailor their vehicle to their preferences, enhancing both the performance and aesthetics of the VZx.
