First glimpse of Daisy Edgar-Jones in ‘Sense and Sensibility’

A New Adaptation of Sense & Sensibility is in the Works

Jane Austen’s timeless stories continue to inspire new adaptations, and it seems that the world will soon see a fresh take on one of her most beloved novels, Sense & Sensibility. This time, the lead role of Elinor Dashwood will be played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, a rising star in the entertainment industry. The announcement has already sparked excitement among fans of both Austen’s work and the actress.

Edgar-Jones, who gained international recognition for her role in the popular series Normal People, recently shared the news on Instagram. On June 25th, she posted a selfie holding the iconic novel, captioning it with a pair of eye emojis. The post quickly went viral, generating a wave of anticipation for the upcoming film.

For those unfamiliar with the original story, Sense & Sensibility follows the lives of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, as they navigate the challenges of life after their father’s death. Struggling with financial difficulties, the sisters look to find suitable suitors to secure their future. The novel explores themes of love, reason, and societal expectations, making it a rich source for adaptation.

The Cast and Crew Behind the Film

The film promises to bring together an impressive cast and crew. Alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, the ensemble includes Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, and Fiona Shaw. Each of these actors brings their own unique talent to the project, ensuring a compelling performance.

On the production side, Focus Features and Working Title Films are once again collaborating on this adaptation. These companies have previously worked on successful Jane Austen adaptations such as the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice and the 2020 film Emma. The director of the new Sense & Sensibility film is Georgia Oakley, a BAFTA nominee known for her distinctive vision.

Speaking about the film’s aesthetic, Oakley expressed her desire to create a more authentic portrayal of Regency England. In an interview with Vogue, she mentioned that she is tired of the idealized version of the era often seen in films. “I’m a little bit sick of the sort of fetishization of that time period,” she said. “I don’t buy all of it.”

The Role of Diana Reid

One of the most exciting aspects of this new adaptation is the involvement of acclaimed Australian author Diana Reid. Known for her works Love & Virtue and Seeing Other People, Reid has written the film adaptation of Sense & Sensibility. She shared the news on Instagram, expressing her disbelief and excitement at being entrusted with such a beloved novel.

“I wrote a film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility and it’s shooting next month, directed by Georgia Oakley and starring @daisyedgarjones,” she wrote. “It is astonishing that they trusted me with this novel, which means so much to so many people. I’m still pinching myself and cannot wait to see this film come to life with such an exceptional team!”

This new adaptation promises to bring a fresh perspective to a classic story, while also honoring its legacy. With a talented cast and crew, and a writer who deeply respects the source material, the film is set to be a standout addition to the long list of Sense & Sensibility adaptations.
