Teacher Texts Student 100 Times in a Day, Calls Her ‘Very Special Person,’ Banned

A Teacher Banned for Inappropriate Conduct with a Student

A 34-year-old teacher has been permanently banned from the teaching profession after engaging in inappropriate communication with a student. The incident, which came to light through an investigation, involved the teacher sending over 100 text messages to the student in a single evening and describing her as a “very special person.”

Stephen White was employed at St Wilfrid’s Catholic School in Crawley when he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student referred to as Pupil A. His conduct included sending personal emails outside of school hours, some of which contained affectionate language that raised concerns about professional boundaries.

One email, sent in May 2021, read: “Just wanted to say a massive thank you for my card and gifts… Thank you for being a good friend to me, also! I will miss you tremendously, you have no idea,” before signing off with “Stephen x.” This message highlighted the emotional nature of their communication, which extended beyond the typical teacher-student relationship.

White also sent the student “upwards of 100 text messages” in one evening after providing her with his personal phone number. During an investigation into his misconduct, it was revealed that the student and White had decided to communicate via text because they believed they were being monitored. White took deliberate steps to avoid detection by the school, including not following management guidelines on limiting contact with Pupil A.

The teacher also wrote a letter to Pupil A that spanned two to three double-sided pages, referring to her as “#1” and describing her as a “very special person.” He shared personal moments with the student, such as sending a photo of his newborn child and giving her gifts like a book of mindfulness quotes, a chocolate bar, and a drink before an exam.

According to the Teaching Regulatory Authority (TRA) report, White’s behavior was deemed “dishonest” and “lacked integrity.” It also identified him as a “safeguarding risk” to Pupil A. The report concluded that his actions violated the Teachers Standards, particularly regarding maintaining proper boundaries, treating pupils with dignity, and ensuring their safety.

An email exchange in 2022 showed White apologizing to Pupil A for being “colder” and “blunter” after being advised by senior staff to reduce contact with her. In response, Pupil A expressed her distress and concern for White’s well-being, saying, “I’m really sorry aswell I don’t want anything bad to happen to you and I’m sorry this has put a strain on you!”

Several teachers, including the deputy headteacher, reported seeing White alone with the student on school premises. In January 2023, a former pupil alerted the school to the ongoing communication between White and Pupil A. When confronted, White initially denied the allegations, but the school eventually suspended him and dismissed him the following day.

The TRA panel found that White had breached multiple standards, leading to his indefinite ban from teaching in any sixth form college, school, youth accommodation, or children’s home in England. However, he may apply to have his eligibility to teach restored in the future.

Michael Ferry, the headteacher of St Wilfrid’s Catholic School, stated that while he could not disclose specific details due to confidentiality, the school acted swiftly and informed the relevant authorities. He emphasized the school’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding all students and staff.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining clear professional boundaries and the serious consequences of violating them.
