Eels Face Injury Challenges, Remain Focused on Victory
Parramatta’s injury crisis continues to grow, but the team is determined not to let their struggles define their performance as they prepare for a crucial match against the Gold Coast Titans. The Eels have been hit hard by injuries, with eight players missing due to various ailments. This includes Bailey Simonsson, Sean Russell, Jonah Pezet, and debutant Apa Twidle, who were all injured in last week’s heartbreaking 22-20 overtime loss to the Wests Tigers.
These losses add to the list of absentees, which now includes J’Maine Hopgood, Isaiah Iongi, Matt Doorey, and Jordan Samrani. The team will be without a combined total of 361 games of experience, making this challenge even more daunting. However, the Eels are not dwelling on their misfortune; instead, they are focusing on how to bounce back and return to winning form.
Will Penisini Makes Comeback
One bright spot for the Eels is the return of Will Penisini to the center position after recovering from a groin injury sustained during the round-two loss to Melbourne. The 23-year-old, who has already played 101 games, admitted it was frustrating to watch the team struggle in recent weeks.
“No player wants to sit on the sideline and watch their team play,” Penisini said. “Especially if you think you can get out there and make a difference, but it was a lesson of patience for me individually.”

Despite his absence, Penisini remains confident in the team’s ability to overcome these challenges. He praised the depth of the squad that the Eels have developed over the pre-season, even though they did not expect to rely on their younger players so early in the season.
“We’re building on a culture that we’re very connected on and off the field,” he said. “For the boys that are getting the opportunities, they’ve trained hard, they’ve earned it, and it gives us a bit of motivation to go out and play harder for them.”
A Culture of Hard Work and Development
Penisini highlighted the importance of the local juniors who are stepping up to fill the gaps left by the injured players. He noted that it’s exciting to see these young talents rise to the occasion and perform well under pressure.
“A lot of them are local juniors. It’s also exciting for us to see those boys come up and do a job, that’s what we want to build as a club.”
He added that while the team is not playing the victim card, they are still sad for the players who have been injured. However, the focus remains on moving forward and preparing for the upcoming match.
Preparing for a Tough Challenge
The Eels are currently tied with the Titans on the ladder, sitting at 14th place, while the Titans are in 15th. Penisini acknowledged the threat posed by the Gold Coast side, which has several standout players capable of turning the game around.
“They’ve obviously got strike all over the ground and some special players that can make something out of nothing,” he said. “But we’re looking at our own preparation and us as a team and what we need to do. We’re excited.”
New Additions to the Squad
In addition to Penisini’s return, the Eels have welcomed a few new faces into the lineup. Winger Araz Nanva makes his debut, while Ronald Volkman returns to the interchange bench. There is also potential for another debut from Teancum Brown, adding to the excitement surrounding the team’s upcoming performance.
As the Eels face yet another difficult challenge, their determination and resilience remain strong. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, the team is ready to fight for every win and prove that their current struggles are just a temporary setback.
