Three nights of pain for NSW Blues coach

A Challenging Week for NSW Origin Coach Laurie Daley

The past few days have been a nightmare for NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley, as several key players in his 2026 squad have suffered serious injuries. Tom Trbojevic, Mitch Kenny, and Payne Haas – all strong contenders for the Blues jersey – have each faced setbacks that could significantly impact their availability for the upcoming series.

Daley, who is set to be in Melbourne on Monday to help launch this year’s interstate series, humorously mentioned that he might need to dust off his boots if the list of injured players continued to grow. The situation has left him with a difficult task ahead as he prepares for the selection process.

Injuries That Could Change the Game

Trbojevic, known for his speed and ability to break through tackles, is facing up to eight weeks on the sidelines due to a “moderate” hamstring strain. He was forced to hobble from the field during the first half of a match on Thursday night, which raised concerns about his fitness going into the Origin series.

Mitch Kenny, the Panthers’ No.9, suffered a leg fracture during a game against the Dolphins on Friday in Darwin. Scans scheduled for Monday are expected to confirm ligament damage to his ankle, which could keep him out for up to three months. Daley had high hopes for Kenny, describing him as a player who would be suited to Origin football. His style, characterized by toughness, leadership, and aggressive play, made him a strong candidate for the squad.

On Sunday, Broncos officials confirmed that Payne Haas is facing up to six weeks out after injuring his left knee in a hard-fought win over the Wests Tigers. Early assessments suggest a grade two to grade three MCL injury, and he is set to undergo scans to determine the full extent of the damage.

Additional Concerns for the Blues

Kotoni Staggs, another potential contender for the NSW jersey, has been dealing with plantar fasciitis over the past few weeks and is being monitored on a week-to-week basis. This adds to the growing list of injuries that Daley must navigate as he builds his squad.

Despite these challenges, Daley remains optimistic about other players’ form. Nathan Cleary and Latrell Mitchell delivered an impressive performance against the Dragons on Saturday, scoring four tries. Isaah Yeo, the team’s lock and captain, also showed strong form, while Cameron Murray provided versatility by playing in both the middle and on the edge.

Decisions to Be Made

With several key players sidelined, Daley faces tough decisions. For instance, even if Haas recovers quickly, he may not be ready to play in the first match against Queensland. Additionally, Hudson Young’s two-week suspension means he will only have one match before facing the Maroons, given Canberra’s bye.

Other players such as Liam Martin (knee injury), Bradman Best (groin injury), Stephen Crichton (shoulder injury), and Max King (broken jaw) are also uncertain for the series. However, there are some positives, with players like Cleary and Mitchell in good form.

Controversial Player Availability

Daley has also been asked about Moses Leota’s eligibility for the NSW squad. Leota, who arrived in western Sydney just four months after turning 13, is under consideration for a possible dispensation. However, Daley has remained tight-lipped on the matter, simply stating, “He’s not available right now.” This leaves the issue unresolved, adding another layer of complexity to the selection process.

As the countdown to the Origin series continues, Daley will need to make strategic choices to build a strong and competitive team despite the current challenges.
