World’s longest pedestrian bridge opens in Helsinki

A New Landmark for Helsinki

Helsinki has unveiled a new landmark that is set to change the city’s landscape. The Kruunuvuorensilta bridge, now open to the public, is the longest and tallest bridge in Finland. This impressive structure connects Korkeasaari with Kruunuvuorenranta and spans an impressive 1,191 metres. However, unlike many other bridges, it is exclusively designed for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport.

This new bridge has significantly reduced the distance between Kruunuvuorenranta and the city centre, cutting the travel time from 11 kilometres to just five-and-a-half kilometres. It’s a major step forward for urban connectivity and accessibility.

Mayor of Helsinki, Daniel Sazonov, expressed his excitement about the new bridge, stating:

“Kruunuvuorensilta bridge is the new, unique and exciting landmark for Helsinki. A sight that will draw visitors from near and far. The new bridge reshapes how we look at Helsinki. It attaches the areas of Kruunuvuorenranta and Laajasalo in a completely new way to the larger central city area.”

The bridge quickly became a popular destination, with more than 50,000 people visiting during its opening weekend.

Other New Attractions in Helsinki

In addition to the Kruunuvuorensilta bridge, Helsinki has several other exciting developments that are worth exploring.

Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall

One of the most notable additions is the Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall, which reopened in February after a period of closure. As the oldest still-operating swimming hall in the Nordics, it’s a must-visit for those interested in Art Deco architecture. The building offers a glimpse into the past while providing modern facilities for swimmers.

Seurasaari Open-Air Museum

Another upcoming attraction is the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, which plans to open a traditional Finnish summer cottage in the coming months. This cottage, originally completed in 1953, offers a real insight into how Finns enjoy their warmer months. It has been continuously used since its completion, making it a valuable piece of cultural heritage.

Taulu Restaurant

At Helsinki Central Railway Station, a new restaurant called Taulu has opened within the building’s historic dining hall. This establishment brings a fresh culinary experience to one of the city’s most iconic locations.

Waldorf Astoria Helsinki

For those looking for luxury accommodation, the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki has recently opened its doors. This spectacular hotel offers some of the largest suites in the city, featuring in-room saunas, steam rooms, and jacuzzis on private terraces. It’s an ideal choice for those seeking comfort and elegance.

These new attractions add to Helsinki’s appeal as a vibrant and dynamic city, offering something for everyone, whether they’re interested in history, culture, or simply enjoying the scenic beauty of the region.
