Jon Rahm’s Dominant Performance at LIV Golf Mexico City
Jon Rahm delivered a stunning performance at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, securing a six-shot victory with a final round of 7-under 64. This win marks his second triumph on the Saudi-funded circuit this year, showcasing his ability to rise above the challenges that have defined the week.
Rahm’s journey to victory was not without its struggles. Last season, he competed on LIV Golf without a win, though he managed to secure the points title. His history with the Chapultepec Golf Club dates back to 2017 when it hosted a World Golf Championship, where he faced disappointment. However, this time around, there was no doubt about his success after making a birdie on the reachable par-4 second hole and then holing out for an eagle on the next. He played bogey-free throughout the day, a testament to his focus and skill.
“I would not have believed you if you told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’d be winning by a six-shot margin this week,” Rahm said. “Hell of an effort.”
The week leading up to the tournament was marked by uncertainty surrounding the future of the Saudi-funded league. CEO Scott O’Neil sent a memo to staff stating that LIV Golf would remain funded through the end of the year, despite ongoing speculation about its financial stability. The league also announced its return to Chapultepec next year, adding a sense of continuity to the event.
However, the week was not without its challenges. A power outage on Tuesday added to the uncertainty, and during the opening round, the streaming went out for two hours. Additionally, Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, which he did not want to worsen. DeChambeau, who was aiming to become the first player to win three consecutive times on LIV Golf, was 16 shots behind Rahm when he decided to step away.
“I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury,” DeChambeau stated on social media. “Not how I wanted this week to go.”
DeChambeau plans to be evaluated and hopes to compete in the upcoming LIV Golf Virginia event from May 7-10, just a week before the PGA Championship.
Rahm’s Team Also Shines
Rahm’s success was not only individual but also team-oriented. His Legion XIII team secured their first win of the year, highlighting the collective effort that contributed to the victory.
David Puig finished in second place with a score of 66, earning valuable world ranking points. This result ensures that he will likely qualify for the PGA Championship. The Spaniard is close enough to potentially earn a spot in the U.S. Open with another strong performance in Virginia.
Overall, the LIV Golf Mexico City event was a mix of high achievement and unforeseen challenges. Rahm’s performance stood out as a beacon of consistency and determination, proving that even in the face of uncertainty, excellence can still be achieved.
