A Special Moment on the Field
In a moment that will be remembered for years to come, Austin Hedges, a catcher for the Cleveland Guardians, made history not just on the baseball field but also in his personal life. During a game against the Baltimore Orioles, Hedges scored the first run of the game, but what happened after the final out was even more significant.
Hedges proposed to his girlfriend, Lexi Dickinson, right on the field following Cleveland’s 8-4 victory over the Orioles. Dickinson accepted the proposal with joy and excitement. “I’ve had the ring since early spring training, but was just trying to figure out when the right time was,” Hedges shared. “I was going to do it regardless… but I really wanted to win that game to make it extra special.”
This wasn’t just a random gesture; it was a carefully planned moment. The 33-year-old catcher and his soon-to-be wife began dating in November 2024. Hedges is in his 12th major league season, with six of those years spent with the Guardians. His long career has earned him respect and admiration within the team’s clubhouse, which is why many of his teammates were present for the proposal. They stood at a respectful distance, giving the couple their privacy while still being part of the celebration.
A Day Filled with Nerves and Excitement
For Hedges, the day was filled with nerves. “I had a lot of nerves today,” he admitted. “I’m always nervous for baseball games, but just trying to stay present, knowing there were some activities after made it harder. It was a special day. A special day to be able to soak it all in.”
Despite the pressure, Hedges managed to keep his focus on the game, contributing to the team’s success. He is currently batting .250 with two RBIs in nine games this season. When he starts behind the plate, the Guardians are undefeated, with an 8-0 record.
Hedges’ journey through Major League Baseball has been impressive. A 2023 World Series champion with the Texas Rangers, he reached 10 years of service time on March 30. His career began with the San Diego Padres in 2015, where he spent parts of six seasons. In 2023, he also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
A Celebration on and Off the Field
As Dickinson remained on the diamond, she received congratulations from friends and other Guardians spouses and wives. Meanwhile, Hedges took a quick shower and changed into a stylish maroon suit, ready for the next part of the evening.
“Now, we’re going to go to dinner and then just have a night to ourselves and enjoy it,” he said, reflecting on the significance of the day. This moment was not just about baseball; it was about love, commitment, and a new chapter in Hedges’ life.
The Guardians’ clubhouse has always been a place of camaraderie and support, and this event further solidified the bond between Hedges and his teammates. As he prepares for the next phase of his life, Hedges continues to be a valuable member of the team, both on and off the field.
