Rusty Pistons Fall in NBA Playoffs Opener to Magic

Detroit Pistons Face Early Challenges in Playoff Debut

DETROIT — The Detroit Pistons are set to begin their highly-anticipated playoff journey with a tough challenge. In Game 1 of their first-round matchup against the Orlando Magic, the Pistons struggled to find their rhythm and ultimately fell short.

The game was marked by slow starts, poor paint defense, and a disjointed offense, leading to a 112-101 loss at the hands of the Magic. The Pistons found themselves trailing almost the entire night, and whenever they managed to close the gap, the Magic quickly took control again.

Cade Cunningham delivered a standout performance, scoring 39 points on 48% shooting, while Tobias Harris added 17 points. On the other side, Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 23 points, showcasing his dominance in the post throughout the game.

The size advantage of the Magic’s starting lineup proved to be a significant challenge for the Pistons. Center Jalen Duren was limited to eight points and six rebounds, and despite the Pistons outscoring Orlando down low (54-34), they struggled to keep up with the Magic’s physicality.

The game started poorly for the Pistons, who had not played in a week. Jalen Suggs gave the Magic an early lead with two three-pointers and 11 points in the first quarter. A quick 18-5 deficit left the crowd at Little Caesars Arena stunned as the East’s top-seeded team struggled out of the gate.

However, the Pistons gradually began to chip away at the deficit. Cade Cunningham and Kevin Huerter each hit deep shots, showing signs of improvement. A shift in momentum came when Banchero attempted a dunk but was met with a forceful block from Isaiah Stewart. After the play, Stewart looked toward Pistons legend Ben Wallace seated behind the basket, paying respect, while Cunningham scored on the other end.

Despite getting as close as two points, the Magic capitalized on several empty possessions by the Pistons, extending their lead to 35-27 through the first quarter.

Tobias Harris helped get the Pistons moving in the second quarter with some physical play in the paint. Both teams struggled offensively, racking up fouls and playing hard-nosed defense. Even with the Pistons shooting only 36% from the field in the first half, their defense remained crucial. A combined five first-half steals from Ausar Thompson and Javonte Green kept the Pistons engaged, allowing them to stay just behind, 55-51, at halftime.

The third quarter saw extreme swings in momentum as the Magic quickly extended their lead by 11 with some early makes. Duncan Robinson and Harris hit corner threes, and Cunningham drove through traffic to complete a 10-0 run in about 100 seconds. After a timeout, Cunningham hit a game-tying three, but the Magic responded immediately with consecutive contested threes from Banchero and Desmond Bane, re-establishing their 11-point lead.

A seven-point deficit loomed as the Pistons entered the fourth quarter. Robinson and Cunningham hit from deep, and Cunningham continued to provide energy for the Pistons, even as their defense failed to shut down the Magic long enough for a full comeback.

The Pistons found quality looks down the stretch, but converting on them proved to be a significant challenge. The first game of the series lived up to expectations as a physical, all-out matchup. However, the Pistons made more mistakes, leaving them at an 0-1 disadvantage and still without a playoff win at LCA.

Upcoming Matchup

Game 2 of the series is set for Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. Fans will be eager to see if the Pistons can bounce back and take a commanding lead in the series.
