South Festival Unites Music and Literature in Tallahassee

The 2026 Word of South Festival took place across Cascades Park over the weekend, offering a vibrant celebration of creativity and the arts in Tallahassee. The event brought together a diverse array of music, literature, and artistic expression, drawing in people of all ages and solidifying its status as one of the city’s most dynamic annual gatherings.

This year’s festival featured an expanded lineup of programming, with a stronger focus on storytelling across various mediums and genres. Southern literature authors shared the stage with editorial writers, fantasy writers, illustrators, and other creative professionals, creating a rich tapestry of literary and artistic experiences.

Attendees had the opportunity to explore a wide range of activities, from intimate author readings to large-scale lectures. Personal booths allowed visitors to interact directly with authors, publishers, and artists, fostering meaningful connections within the literary community.

“I love being here to support the Southeast Review, FSU’s literary journal, and all of the good work that we do, all of the good artists that we publish, and our other programming, as well, such as our Incarcerated Writing Program,” said Riley Richards.

Musical performances were also a highlight of the festival, with smaller acts performing on various stages throughout the park. Headliners took the main stage amphitheater, while a local marching band provided entertainment in different areas of the park throughout the morning.

“My favorite part of today has been meeting a community of really awesome people,” said Melina McGahey. “I feel all of the people have been really kind and interested and invested in the literary community. It’s a community very important to maintain and respect.”

The festival continued into Sunday, offering more opportunities for attendees to engage with the event. Those interested in learning more about the lineup of events, authors, and musical performances can visit the official website at https://wordofsouthfestival.com/.
