Mitch Johnson Named Coach of the Year Finalist by NBA

Mitch Johnson’s Rise to Coach of the Year Finalist

The NBA recently announced that Mitch Johnson, a former assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, has been named one of three finalists for the prestigious Coach of the Year award. This recognition marks a significant milestone in Johnson’s career and highlights his impact on the team since stepping into the head coaching role.

Johnson’s journey to this point has been nothing short of inspiring. His selection has brought joy to many within the Spurs organization, especially players who have worked closely with him over the years. One such player is forward Devin Vassell, who expressed his excitement about Johnson’s achievement.

“I’m tremendously happy for him,” Vassell said before Game 1 of the Spurs’ first-round playoff series against Portland. “He was my guy, my personal development guy. So to see the growth he’s had, to see where he is at now, to be able to come in after a coach like coach Pop, one of the greatest coaches of all time, if not the greatest coach of all time, and have the type of season he’s had and be able to lead us and take control over this team and over this organization has been huge to see.”

A Season of Growth and Leadership

Johnson took over as head coach in May when Gregg Popovich retired from coaching. Popovich, known as the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and a five-time league champion, left big shoes to fill. However, Johnson quickly proved himself capable of leading the team.

Under Johnson’s guidance, the Spurs achieved a remarkable 62-20 record during the regular season. This success came after a challenging 2024-25 season where Johnson served as the acting head coach following Popovich’s stroke, which occurred just five games into the season. The team finished with a 34-48 record during that period.

“It just shows how much work and how much trust the organization and the players have in him,” Vassell added. “I think he should win coach of the year. It’s just been an amazing year and we’re just getting started.”

Other Contenders for the Award

Johnson is competing against two other notable coaches for the Red Auerbach Trophy. The other finalists are J.B. Bickerstaff of the Detroit Pistons and Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics. Both have also demonstrated exceptional leadership and contributed significantly to their teams’ success this season.

Looking Ahead

As the playoffs begin, the Spurs are eager to build on the momentum they’ve gained throughout the regular season. With Johnson at the helm, the team is confident in their ability to compete at the highest level.

The recognition of Johnson as a Coach of the Year finalist is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the trust placed in him by both the organization and the players. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Johnson can add another accolade to his growing list of achievements.
