Cunningham’s Effort Not Enough as Pistons Fall to Magic in Game 1

The Detroit Pistons are set to begin their 2026 NBA postseason at home in the Little Caesars Arena, facing off against the Orlando Magic. This marks a significant moment for the Pistons, who have secured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference after finishing the regular season with a 60-22 record. This achievement is especially notable as it represents the first time since the 2005-06 season that the team has reached the 60-win milestone.

Led by All-Star center Cade Cunningham, the Pistons are looking to make history in more ways than one. They are aiming for their first home postseason win since 2008, a goal they were unable to achieve last year when they lost all three of their home games in the first-round series against the New York Knicks. The team’s performance this season has been impressive, but the pressure to deliver on home court will be immense.

The Orlando Magic, on the other hand, enter the playoffs as the No. 8 seed after winning their Play-In Tournament game against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. This matchup between the Pistons and the Magic is the first time these two teams have faced each other in the playoffs since the 2007-08 season, when Detroit emerged victorious in the Eastern Conference semifinals in five games.

Despite a challenging season marked by injuries, the Magic managed to finish with a 45-37 record. One of their key players, starting forward Franz Wagner, played only 34 games this season due to injury. However, his presence and contributions have still made an impact on the team’s overall performance.

Pistons play from behind all game, lose Game 1 of First Round vs. Magic despite Cunningham’s 39 points

The Pistons’ struggles at the free throw line continue as Jenkins splits his free throws. Wagner gets three points, then after a Jenkins missed 3-pointer from the corner, Wagner lobs it up to Suggs as the Magic are now up by 11, thanks to a technical free throw made by Cunningham. The Little Caesars Arena crowd starts to leave after that last made basket by the Magic. Cunningham puts up more points as he’s up to 39, but a Wendell Carter Jr. breakaway dunk ends it as the Pistons drop Game 1 in a stunning upset.

Cunningham has 34, but Magic again keep leading, up 103-95 over Pistons with less than four minutes left in Game 1

Suggs picks up his fifth foul, then Cunningham hits a mid-range bucket as he has seven points in this fourth quarter already. Wagner surprises everyone with a big poster dunk on Ausar Thompson, then the crowd gets loud as two Cunningham free throws drops the deficit to four points. Bane quiets the crowd with a corner-3, then Wendell Carter Jr. lays it in and just like that, the Magic are up by nine points again. The Pistons get in the bonus with 5:47, but Jalen Duren splits his free throws. Jenkins goes to the line after a foul by Bane as Orlando calls timeout with 3:45 left in this contest.

Pistons, Magic go back-and-forth again, Orlando still leads, 94-86, early in fourth quarter

Pistons and Magic start the fourth quarter going shot-for-shot, including a sequence where Duncan Robinson hits a three, then Jalen Suggs answers with a 3-pointer of his own. There’s some incredible offense going on right now, but a Franz Wagner floater gives the Magic a 8-point game lead with 8:15 left in this game.

Cunningham scores nine points in third quarter, Pistons down 81-74 with one quarter remaining in Game 1

Seems like very little is going the Pistons’ way in this quarter, as a foul on Ron Holland is overturned thanks to a coach’s challenge. Orlando goes over two minutes without a point but the Pistons only get four points out of it as Bane is fouled and makes two free throws to end the drought. Cunningham answers with a tough mid-range make, then Jenkins closes the third quarter with a block on a 3-point attempt from Black and more stout defense as the Pistons enter the fourth quarter down seven points.

Magic pull away, use 9-0 run to take 79-68 lead over Pistons late in third quarter

Cade Cunningham hits a three for the first tie since early in the first quarter, but Paolo Banchero answers back with a tough shot over Jalen Duren, then Desmond Bane hits a 3-pointer as the Magic keep their lead. Just when it seems like Detroit’s getting close, Orlando hits a few shots to keep their distance away, as Anthony Black’s three, followed by a fastbreak layup, gives the Magic another 11-point lead as a timeout is called with 3:43 left in the third quarter.

Pistons go 4-for-4, including 2-for-2 from deep, in short time to cut into deficit against Magic, down 63-62

Seems like that timeout woke up the Pistons, as they answer back by hitting four straight shots, which includes a corner 3-pointer from Duncan Robinson and Tobias Harris each as they quickly trim this deficit down to just a point, looking to take their first lead of the game as the Magic call timeout with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter.

Magic again start a quarter hot, Pistons down 63-52 early in third quarter

The Magic open up the second half by hitting four of their first five shots, meanwhile the Pistons go scoreless as Tobias Harris goes 0-for-2 from 3-point range. What was once a four-point deficit for Detroit has ballooned up back to 11 as the Pistons call an early timeout.

Halftime: No. 8 Magic 55, No. 1 Pistons 51

Game 1 in this Eastern Conference First Round series has started off with a surprise as top-seeded Detroit trails by four points to Orlando. As of yet, no lower seed has won in this opening weekend of playoff basketball, but that could change tonight at the expense of the Pistons.

Neither team is shooting well, with the Pistons at around 36% from the field and the Magic at 41%, but that’s to be expected in this series against two physical, defensive-minded teams. Paolo Banchero currently leads all scorers with 17 first-half points, including hitting both of his three-pointers, which is surprising for someone who shot 30% from deep during the regular season.

The biggest surprise is that the Pistons haven’t led at all in this opening game. Cade Cunningham is leading the Pistons with 14 points, but only has one assist as the Magic are getting the ball out of his hands. Other than Tobias Harris’ nine points, no other Pistons has more than five points so far, but every player of the 10 that J.B. Bickerstaff has put out tonight has scored.

Pistons down, 55-51, at halftime as Magic keep slim lead in back-and-forth Game 1

Detroit’s getting to the line but can’t fully take advantage, as Cade Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart both split their free throws as the Magic still lead. Cunningham misses his three, but Wagner makes his in the corner and Harris misses a shot at the buzzer, as the Magic keep their lead heading to halftime. There’s still a half of basketball left, but the Pistons are the first higher seed to trail at halftime in this 2026 NBA Playoffs.

Defense keeping Pistons within distance, still trail 49-47 with under four minutes left in first half

Javonte Green tried putting Jalen Suggs on a playoff poster but gets fouled and splits the free throws. Green draws another foul on a jumpshot and hits both free throws this time, as the Pistons are now down two points again. The Pistons continue to be active on defense, as Ausar Thompson gets a steal on Franz Wagner, then lays in Kevin Huerter’s miss as a timeout is called with 3:34 remaining in the second quarter, and the Pistons are closing in on taking their first lead of the game.

Pistons, Magic keep up pace as Orlando still leads, 47-40, halfway through second quarter

Anthony Black misses two free throws to start the second quarter, but Harris hits two at the line, then defensive hustle from Ron Holland leads to a Harris dunk as the Pistons cut the deficit to four points. Jenkins gets on the fastbreak and wraps a pass around his defender to Holland for another dunk. Pistons keep getting close but can cut the deficit to under two, as the Magic keep answering back with offense. The fouls are piling up for the Pistons in this quarter too, but Jenkins draws a shooting foul on Banchero and hits both free throws. These teams continue to trade buckets as a timeout is called with 6:16 left in this first half.

Magic end first quarter on 6-0 run, Pistons down, 35-27, after first quarter

Cunningham turns it over for a Bane layup, but Tobias Harris answers with a layup, then Daniss Jenkins comes off the bench for the first time and immediately drills his first three to bring the Pistons within two. Orlando quickly answers with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, punctuated by a Goga Bitazde putback dunk with nine seconds left as the Magic take a 35-27 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pistons beginning to find rhythm, still trail Magic 27-20 in first quarter

A Franz Wagner and-one bucket, plus the free throw, extends Orlando’s lead to 18-5 over the Pistons, but a Cade Cunningham 3-pointer finally ends the Magic’s 10-0 run. Orlando’s starting to come back to earth shooting wise but the Pistons are still having trouble on both sides of the ball, as Suggs hits an and-one layup over Duren with the free throw to give the Magic a 27-15 lead. Caris LeVert hits a big three, then Isaiah Stewart stuffs Paolo Banchero with a huge block, leading to a Cunningham dunk as the Magic call timeout with 3:06 left in this opening quarter.

Pistons start cold from offense early, down 13-5 against hot-shooting Magic in first quarter

Pistons win the tip-off in front of a loud crowd at Little Caesars Arena, but it’s Jalen Suggs hitting a deep three for the first points of this game. Duncan Robinson answers back with a three for Detroit’s first bucket tonight. The Pistons are struggling on offense so far, but Tobias Harris draws a foul as Desmond Bane has two early fouls and Harris hits both free throws. A steal and dunk from Suggs gives the Magic a 13-5 lead with 8:27 left in the first quarter as the Pistons call timeout, with Orlando shooting 3-for-4 from three early to help build this lead.
