“I Can’t See Beyond the Tears”: Texoma Town Mourns Beloved School

RAVIA, Oklahoma (KXII) – On Saturday morning, a stroll down memory lane looked a lot like a stroll down Mill Street in Ravia.

“My father graduated from Ravia, I graduated from Ravia, and my son graduated from Ravia, so lots of sadness, lots of tears,” Debbie Morton said. “It’s emotional because this is a very wonderful community and wonderful school.”

On Saturday, the community gathered to say their last goodbyes to a school system as old as the state of Oklahoma.

“Losing the school I feel is going to be very rough on Ravia because that has been, it is the core of this community,” Vickie Pruitt, a teacher, said. “I’m going to miss it.”

Former teachers, students, parents, coaches, athletes and generations of Ravia Cougars came together one final time.

“I’ve been here since kindergarten and I grew up here, I’ve learned everything here,” Ella, an eighth grade student, said. “All my family members, brothers, cousins, mom, and grandpa, they all graduated from Ravia, so being the last of my generation to graduate is very sad.”

The district didn’t have enough state funding to stay open any longer.

When summer starts next month, the school bell will sound once more, then fall silent forever.

“I can’t hardly see beyond the tears,” Pruitt said. “The last day will have tears, lots and lots of tears, hugs, ‘I’m going to miss yous’.”

It’s a moment neither teachers nor students ever thought they’d have to imagine.

“When I was in first grade, I always said I’m going to graduate from this school, and I’m now the last 5th grader, and it’s really sad,” Arley, a fifth grade student, said.

All Ravia students will be absorbed by the neighboring Mill Creek Public Schools.

“I’m excited to go to the new school I’m going to because there’s going to be a lot of people there, which is scary, but I’m excited for it,” Emma, a seventh grade student, said.

Pruitt says she’s glad the students will stay in a district similar in size to Ravia.

“A small school can’t always offer as much as some of the larger schools,” Pruitt said, “but there’s some things that a small school can offer that a large school never can.”

Morton says, while it hurts to lose the school, the community will heal in time.

“The school may not be here, but it’s still home,” Morton said. “It’s home to so many people, and it always will be.”

The Legacy of a Small School

Ravia High School has long been more than just an educational institution—it was the heart of the community. For decades, it served as a place where families formed lasting bonds, where students found their paths, and where memories were made. From graduation ceremonies to sports events, the school was central to the identity of those who lived in the area.

  • The school’s history dates back to the early days of Oklahoma, making it one of the oldest in the region.
  • Over the years, it produced generations of graduates who went on to achieve great things.
  • Teachers and staff worked tirelessly to provide quality education despite limited resources.

A Community United in Grief

As the final day approached, the emotions among residents ran deep. Many felt a sense of loss not only for the school itself but for the connections it represented. The farewell event brought together people of all ages, each with their own stories and memories tied to the building.

  • Students shared how they had grown up within its walls.
  • Parents recalled their own childhoods and the lessons they learned at Ravia.
  • Alumni returned to relive moments from their past.

Moving Forward

While the closure of the school was painful, it also marked a new beginning for the students. They would now be part of a larger district, which promised new opportunities and experiences. However, many expressed mixed feelings about the change.

  • Some were excited about the possibilities of a bigger school.
  • Others were nervous about adjusting to a new environment.
  • Teachers and students alike hoped that the spirit of Ravia would live on in the new setting.

The Importance of a Small School

Despite the challenges, small schools like Ravia have unique advantages. They often foster closer relationships between students and teachers, creating a supportive learning environment. In a large school, it can be easy for students to feel overlooked, but in a smaller setting, every individual is seen and valued.

  • Small schools allow for personalized attention.
  • They encourage strong community ties.
  • They can be more flexible in adapting to the needs of students.

A Lasting Impact

Even though the physical school may no longer exist, its impact will continue to be felt. The memories, friendships, and lessons learned will remain with those who were part of the Ravia community. As the students move forward, they carry with them the legacy of a school that shaped their lives.

  • The school may be closing, but its influence endures.
  • The community will find ways to keep its traditions alive.
  • The future holds promise, even as the past is honored.
