Shekarau’s Return Boosts APC in Kano, Says Gov

Political Shift in Kano State

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has expressed his enthusiasm over the return of former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor described this move as a significant boost for the party in the state, emphasizing that it would further strengthen the ruling party’s structure and political influence ahead of future elections.

Shekarau made a formal announcement on Sunday regarding his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, the former governor stated that his exit from the party took immediate effect.

In response, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, issued a statement on Sunday. According to the statement, a date will soon be announced for the formal reception of Shekarau into the APC, following consultations with the national secretariat of the party.

The governor noted that the APC in Kano has seen increasing support and consolidation across various parts of the state. He emphasized that the APC remains the most dominant political force in Kano and is well-positioned for future electoral contests.

“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement read.

Yusuf added that the party was battle-ready to win all elective positions in the forthcoming elections, citing unity and strategic alignments as factors driving confidence among members. He further assured party members and supporters that the leadership was committed to strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots base across the state.

The governor also urged party faithful to remain steadfast and continue mobilizing support as preparations begin for future political contests.

Shekarau’s Resignation and Political Journey

In his resignation letter, Shekarau stated: “Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today.” He mentioned that the decision followed extensive consultations within his political group, adding that it was part of plans to continue his political journey on another platform.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party,” he stated.

He also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the ward level, praying for continued guidance in their service. “I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.

Shekarau’s return to the APC is expected to reshape political calculations in Kano ahead of the next election cycle. His political journey has been marked by several shifts between parties. In 2014, he joined the PDP from the All Nigeria Peoples Party and served as the Minister of Education under President Goodluck Jonathan until 2015.

He later joined the APC and was elected senator for Kano Central in 2019. The former governor subsequently moved between the PDP, NNPP, and back to PDP, before his return to the APC in 2026.
