NRL splits over controversial sin bin call as Warriors star faces Origin heartbreak

A Controversial Sin-Bin for Tom Flegler Divides NRL Fans

A controversial sin-binning of Tom Flegler has sparked a heated debate among NRL fans following the Dolphins’ defeat to the Warriors in a fierce Anzac Day clash. The match, which ended with a 20-18 victory for the Warriors in Wellington, was marked by several key incidents that have left fans divided.

The game came at a cost for the hosts, with Mitch Barnett forced off the field due to a category one head knock in the second half. This injury rules him out of next week’s game against Parramatta and casts doubt on his chances of being selected for the State of Origin opener. Additionally, Dolphins star Jake Averillo had to leave the field early after sustaining a severe finger injury that required hospital treatment.

Referee Liam Kennedy and Bunker official Ashley Klein were kept busy throughout the contest, with several players placed on report. Notably, Tom Flegler was sent to the bin for an illegal tackle on Ali Leiataua, which set up Taine Tuaupiki’s match-sealing try. The incident became the focal point of the game, with Flegler later apologizing to the Warriors centre after their collision.

Warriors second-rower Leka Halasima was also placed on report for a shoulder charge on Dolphins prop Tom Gilbert. However, only Chanel Harris-Tavita received a sanction in the match review findings, as he was fined for dangerous contact. The Warriors managed to secure the two points, with Alofiana Khan-Pereira scoring a double that helped them achieve their sixth win in eight games, moving them into second place on the ladder.

Despite the victory, the loss of Barnett overshadowed the win. The former NSW prop suffered a head clash with teammate Chanel Harris-Tavita, leading to his early exit from the game. This latest setback adds to a string of injuries for Barnett, who previously broke his thumb in Round 4 and had to end his season after an ACL injury in last year’s Origin series.

Barnett’s injury means he will miss the upcoming game against the Eels in Round 9, followed by a bye in Round 10. This leaves his chances of being selected for the Blues’ Origin squad for Game 1 in serious doubt. Warriors coach Andrew Webster expressed frustration over Barnett’s lack of momentum, stating, “He can’t get any momentum at the moment. He’s had a long layoff and he gets back and something happens… he’s probably more frustrated than anything.”

Leka Halasima could also be sidelined after being placed on report for his shoulder charge on Tom Gilbert. Meanwhile, Leiataua will join Barnett on the sidelines for the Parramatta game after clashing heads with Flegler during the game’s most talked-about moment.

Flegler misread the play that led to Tuaupiki’s try in the 61st minute, turning to stop Leiataua but failing to receive the ball. The collision left Leiataua on the ground, and tensions flared between the teams. Referee Kennedy sent Flegler to the bin, claiming he created a dangerous situation by rushing out of the line.

While some fans agreed with the decision, others felt it was overly harsh on the Dolphins player. The controversy continued to spark debate as the Warriors capitalized on their numerical advantage to secure a hard-fought win.
