The Chief Medical Director of a Lagos-based fertility centre, FertProMax Fertility Clinic, Olajide Wilson, has highlighted the importance of ethical and patient-centred care in assisted reproduction as access to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) grows in Nigeria. He emphasized that innovation in this field must be guided by clinical excellence rather than profit motives.
Wilson, a clinical embryologist and member of the Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health Nigeria, stated that fertility treatment should focus on patients’ overall well-being, especially considering the emotional and financial challenges associated with infertility.
During a facility tour in Gbagada, the CMD mentioned that the centre is expanding its services to assist couples facing infertility, offering advanced reproductive care and monitoring to enhance pregnancy outcomes.

Global Context of Infertility
According to the World Health Organisation, about 17.5 per cent of the global adult population, roughly one in six people, experience infertility, highlighting the need for improved access to quality and affordable care.
Infertility, defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, affects both men and women and is often linked to stigma, emotional distress, and psychosocial challenges.
The WHO has urged urgent action to improve access to high-quality fertility services globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where treatment remains limited and costly.
