Delta Gov Wins Prestigious Awards

Governor Oborevwori Honored for Infrastructure and Urban Renewal Efforts

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has been honored with two prestigious awards by Independent Newspapers, recognizing his administration’s significant contributions to infrastructure development and urban renewal. The governor was awarded the Outstanding Independent Governor and Best Independent Governor in Urban Renewal of the Year 2025 at the media organization’s Silver Jubilee ceremony, which took place on April 19, 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites.

The event, themed “Game Changers: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Tomorrow,” celebrated the 25th anniversary of Independent Newspapers. According to a statement released to Sunday PUNCH, the ceremony highlighted the achievements of individuals and organizations that have made a positive impact on society.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme expressed gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized that the awards reflect the tangible results of the administration’s policies since 2023.

“It is very evident to all Nigerians, especially Deltans, that our governor has significantly changed the narrative since assuming office in 2023,” Onyeme said. “Today, he stands out as one of the best governors in the area of urban renewal. The impact is visible and undeniable.”

The awards come at a time when Delta State is undergoing extensive infrastructure development. This includes the construction of five flyovers in Effurun, Warri, Ughelli, and Agbor, along with road projects spread across the state’s 25 local government areas.

In 2025 alone, the administration delivered approximately 300 kilometers of roads, while also extending development projects to riverine communities through new and rehabilitated road networks. Key projects include the Orerere Bridge in Ughelli South Local Government Area, the completed Beneku Bridge, and the 31-kilometer Ohoror–Bomadi Road, which connects multiple communities previously isolated by difficult terrain.

“We have resolved to rewrite the story of our riverine communities,” the governor had stated in reference to these projects.

Health Sector Developments

In the health sector, the administration has focused on upgrading hospitals and constructing a School of Health Technology in Ovrode, Isoko North Local Government Area. Additionally, the government recently approved a N200,000 tax-free allowance for doctors to address workforce shortages.

Onyeme noted that the recognition would further motivate the government to intensify its development efforts. “When organizations carry out independent assessments and recognize this administration, it does not come as a surprise. The results speak for themselves,” he said.

He added that the government remains committed to delivering more dividends of democracy and leaving a lasting legacy in the state.

Ongoing Initiatives and Future Goals

The governor’s administration has consistently prioritized projects that improve the quality of life for residents of Delta State. From infrastructure to healthcare, the focus has been on creating sustainable and long-term benefits for the people.

With ongoing projects such as the construction of flyovers, road networks, and health facilities, the administration continues to demonstrate its dedication to progress. These initiatives are not only improving connectivity but also fostering economic growth and social development.

As the state moves forward, the recognition from Independent Newspapers serves as a testament to the hard work and vision of Governor Oborevwori and his team. It reinforces their commitment to transforming Delta State into a model of development and innovation.
