New Leadership in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has elected Comrade Salimon Oladiti as its new president. He succeeds Comrade Williams Akporeha, who has concluded his eight-year term in office. Oladiti will lead the union for the next four years, marking a significant transition in the leadership of one of the most influential labor organizations in the country.
Before becoming president, Oladiti served as a National Trustee of NUPENG. His election took place during the 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference, which was held in Lagos. The event brought together delegates from across the country to discuss key issues affecting the oil and gas sector and to elect new leadership.
In addition to Oladiti, Comrade Akin Oladejo was elected as the deputy president. Oladejo previously held the position of Chairman of the union’s Oil and Gas Supply Branch, giving him valuable experience in managing critical aspects of the industry.
Oladiti is stepping into his new role at a crucial time for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The industry is undergoing significant transformations, including refinery expansion, market reforms, and the push towards energy transition. However, these changes are accompanied by ongoing concerns about workers’ welfare and job security, which remain top priorities for the union.
During his farewell speech, outgoing president Akporeha highlighted several pressing issues that need urgent attention. He called on the federal government to take more decisive action to address insecurity across the country. He emphasized that rising levels of insecurity, including petroleum truck hijackings and kidnappings, are having a detrimental impact on economic growth and investment.
Akporeha also pointed out that workers are spending more on security measures due to the increasing threat of crime. He urged the government to improve the welfare of security agencies and provide them with better equipment to combat criminal activities effectively.
Another major concern raised by Akporeha was the poor condition of roads in many parts of the country. He noted that deteriorating infrastructure makes it difficult for union members to carry out their duties, especially with the rainy season approaching. This issue not only affects daily operations but also poses safety risks for workers.
Other participants at the conference echoed similar sentiments, warning that if insecurity is not addressed, it could hinder Nigeria’s economic and political progress. They emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the government, private sector, and labor unions to create a safer environment for all citizens.
Akporeha also advised the new leaders to focus on workers’ welfare and uphold the values of the union. He encouraged them to defend workers’ rights and ensure fairness in the system. His message underscored the importance of maintaining strong solidarity among union members while navigating the challenges of a rapidly changing industry.
As the new leadership takes over, the expectations for NUPENG are high. With Oladiti at the helm, the union is poised to continue advocating for the interests of its members while addressing the broader challenges facing the Nigerian oil and gas sector.
