Our unicorn transforms: Dockers hail star big man

Luke Jackson: The ‘Unicorn’ of Fremantle

Luke Jackson, known as the ‘Unicorn’ for his unique athleticism, is showing signs of becoming a dominant force in the AFL. At 199cm, Jackson’s ability to excel both in the air and on the ground has made him a standout player. His journey from Melbourne to Fremantle has been marked by significant growth, especially in recent seasons.

Jackson’s starpower has always been evident. While at Melbourne, he played a crucial role in the club’s 2021 grand final victory over the Western Bulldogs, serving as an understudy to Max Gawn. However, it is at Fremantle that Jackson has truly taken his game to new heights.

During the recent pre-season training, Jackson spent time as a big-bodied midfielder, which has had a positive impact on his overall performance. Despite Sean Darcy’s form and fitness issues, Jackson has been the No.1 ruckman for most of the season. This extended period of training as a midfielder has contributed to his improved fitness and strength.

In a recent match against Carlton, Jackson delivered two stunning goals on the run. Both goals came after he won the centre bounce ruck tap and then streamed forward to receive the ball back. His performance in that game was impressive, with stats including 31 hit-outs, 21 disposals, six tackles, three clearances, two contested marks, two goals, and eight score involvements.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir praised Jackson’s progress, noting that he has become fitter and stronger. “He’s really put the time into the gym, and he’s able to stand there and wrestle with the rucks as well now, and not just relying on his jump,” Longmuir said. “He’s evolved all aspects of his game.”

The new ruck rules have also benefited Jackson, allowing him to be more effective when the ball hits the ground. “He’s unique. He’s a good aerial player and a good tap ruckman, but he’s just as good at ground level, because once it hits the deck, he becomes another midfielder,” Longmuir added. “He’s pretty electric when he gets up and about like that.”

With Sean Darcy sidelined due to a calf injury, former Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox has stepped in as Jackson’s understudy. Cox had a quiet debut in the western derby win over West Coast but showed more promise in the 14-point victory over Carlton. He recorded eight disposals, three contested marks, two goals, three tackles, and eight hitouts. His presence became even more important after spearhead Pat Voss was withdrawn due to illness.

Fremantle is currently performing well, sitting at 6-1. They are aiming for their seventh consecutive win when they face the injury-ravaged Western Bulldogs (4-3) at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.
