Pep Guardiola Honors Southampton After Dramatic FA Cup Comeback
Manchester City secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Southampton at Wembley, advancing to their fourth consecutive FA Cup final. The match was a tense and unpredictable affair, with the second-tier Saints coming close to pulling off a major upset before City found a way to turn the game around.
The semi-final began as a slow-burn contest, but it all changed in the 79th minute when Finn Azaz scored a stunning goal to put Southampton ahead. The goal sparked a reaction from Manchester City, who quickly responded through substitute Jeremy Doku, whose deflected strike equalized the score. Just minutes later, Nico Gonzalez delivered a powerful 87th-minute shot that sealed the win for City.
Guardiola, the City manager, praised his team’s resilience and highlighted the energy they displayed in the second half. “I never thought it would be easy,” he said, reflecting on the challenge posed by Southampton. He also acknowledged the importance of the players’ efforts, noting that if they had started the game from the beginning, they wouldn’t have had the same level of energy.
“The first half was not bad. We didn’t concede much. In the second half we played in the level that we played in Burnley,” Guardiola added. He admitted that City wasn’t clinical enough in the first half, allowing Southampton to create opportunities. “How many times in the second half did Southampton cross halfway? One. And what a goal. Football is unpredictable.”
A Test of Resilience and Strategy
Southampton’s performance was nothing short of commendable. They came into the match on a 20-game unbeaten run and were determined to make history, aiming to replicate their 1976 FA Cup triumph. Despite being down 1-0, they showed great determination, even having a first-half goal from Leo Scienza disallowed due to an offside decision.
Head coach Tonda Eckert praised his team’s performance, calling it “outstanding” over big parts of the game. “In these games you’re not going to have a lot of moments, you know that you always get a couple,” he said. “We had a very big one in the first half, it’s a very tight decision and then we had a couple in the second half.”
Eckert also noted that City’s goals were unexpected, given the team’s usual style of play. “We had a look how they scored their goals this season and there are not too many goals they scored from outside the box so far. Unfortunately, it was two today.”
Looking Ahead to the Final
With this victory, Manchester City will face either Chelsea or Leeds in the FA Cup final on May 16. The team remains in contention for a domestic treble, although Guardiola has been cautious about discussing the possibility.
“Now it’s far away,” he said, referring to the treble. “Before the Aston Villa game (on May 24), that night I will tell you if there is a chance. Now it’s far, far away.”
Guardiola has also given his players three days off before their next match against Everton. “Now it’s important we have three days off for the players. I told them don’t think about football, rest. Now we start a season for five games, plus the final of the FA Cup.”

A Bittersweet Outcome for Southampton
Despite the loss, Southampton’s performance earned them widespread praise. Their ability to hold their own against one of the best teams in the country showcased their strength and determination. For the fans, the match was a memorable experience, and the disappointment of falling just short of a historic win was palpable.
Eckert expressed his pride in the team’s effort. “I think we’ve done absolutely everything to represent this football club in the best way possible today. Obviously we wanted to give the supporters a final here at Wembley. We were very close, so I think it’s quite natural that there is a good sense of disappointment straight after the game.”
