Nigerian Striker Victor Boniface Makes Return to Werder Bremen Squad
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface made a return to the matchday squad for Werder Bremen in a recent Bundesliga fixture, marking a significant step in his recovery from a knee injury. The club is currently striving to ensure its place in the German top flight, and Boniface’s inclusion on the bench during a 1–1 draw against Stuttgart highlights his potential role in the remaining games of the season.
Despite not being used in the match, the 26-year-old forward remains a key figure for Bremen as they look to secure their position in the league. Upcoming fixtures against Augsburg, Hoffenheim, and Borussia Dortmund could provide him with an opportunity to make an impact before the end of the season.
Bremen currently sit in 12th place in the Bundesliga table with 32 points, and they need at least three points from their final three matches to guarantee safety. This makes every game crucial for the team’s survival, and Boniface’s return to training adds a layer of optimism for the squad.
Boniface has not featured in any competitive action for Bremen since appearing for just 11 minutes as a substitute in a 3–2 defeat to Hamburg on December 7, 2025. His absence was initially attributed to a serious knee injury that seemed to rule him out for the remainder of the season. As a result, he returned to his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen, for rehabilitation.
He rejoined Werder Bremen in late March and resumed training, signaling a positive development in his recovery process. However, his time at Bremen has been marred by ongoing fitness challenges, which have limited his appearances and effectiveness on the pitch.
Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, explained that the decision to loan Boniface to Bremen last summer was intended to help him regain full fitness after a season disrupted by injuries. Despite this, the striker has continued to face setbacks this season, raising concerns about his consistency and availability.
Rolfes emphasized that Boniface’s quality is not in question, but he acknowledged the physical toll of elite football and the demanding schedule as factors contributing to his struggles. “In his first season he was unbelievable, and his second season was also good,” Rolfes said. “But in his second season he had injury problems, and last summer we agreed he needed more training to get back into peak condition.”
Before his latest injury, Boniface made 11 appearances for Bremen following his season-long loan move, contributing two assists. His initial period at the club was challenging, as he struggled to secure a regular starting role during his first three months. The knee injury further complicated his progress, limiting his impact on the team.
With the Bundesliga season drawing to a close, Bremen will be hoping that Boniface can play a vital role in securing their survival. His return to the squad represents a step in the right direction, and fans will be watching closely to see if he can make a meaningful contribution in the coming weeks.
