A New Era for Ikoyi Club’s Golf Section

The Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 recently kicked off its 2026 competitive calendar with the Captain’s Inaugural Kitty tournament. The event took place on the club’s course in Ikoyi, Lagos, and brought together members and guests for a day filled with friendly competition and camaraderie. This marked the first major golfing event under the section’s new leadership, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.

The tournament was not only a test of skill but also a celebration of the club’s rich heritage. The overall winner walked away with a prize of N200,000, while other top performers received cash prizes of N100,000 and N50,000, respectively. In addition to the monetary rewards, participants were also treated to table fridges, individual awards, and goodie bags from sponsors. The prize-giving ceremony concluded what organisers described as a successful day on the course, highlighting the enthusiasm and engagement of the attendees.

Strategic Transformation Under New Leadership

Vice chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938, Bolaji Martins, emphasized that the club is currently undergoing a strategic transformation aimed at modernizing its facilities while preserving its identity and heritage. He outlined a roadmap that includes infrastructure upgrades and a deliberate effort to create a more inclusive environment. This initiative is designed to cater to both long-standing members and younger professionals who are joining the community.

Martins highlighted the club’s historical role as a meeting point for business leaders and diplomats. He stressed that sustaining this reputation requires discipline and a clear sense of shared values among its membership. “We are more than just a club; we are a family with a shared legacy. The current executive team is focused on building a foundation that future generations will cherish,” he said.

Vision for the Golf Section

Captain of the Golf Section, Afolabi Balogun, shared his vision for the section, which goes beyond organizing tournaments. He described his goal as delivering a complete experience for golfers of all levels. Balogun emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of the course, ensuring that both beginners and experienced players find it consistently rewarding.

Balogun also mentioned his plans to expand the tournament calendar for the year and strengthen golf’s role as a vehicle for networking, health, and professional engagement within Lagos. “The Ikoyi Club Golf Section represents a proud legacy. My team and I are simply its stewards, dedicated to ensuring we leave it stronger for future generations,” he said.

Future Events and Community Engagement

The Captain’s Inaugural Kitty is the first in a series of golf events the section plans to stage across the year under Balogun’s captaincy. These events are expected to bring together members and guests for more opportunities to engage in competitive play, build relationships, and celebrate the club’s traditions.

As the Golf Section continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to fostering a sense of community and upholding the standards that have made Ikoyi Club 1938 a respected institution. With new leadership and a clear vision, the club is well-positioned to welcome the next chapter of its storied history.
