Chris Greenacre Appointed as Permanent Coach of Wellington Phoenix
After four stints as the interim coach of the Wellington Phoenix, Chris Greenacre has finally secured a permanent position with the club. This marks a significant milestone in his career, as he has now been signed for the upcoming season with an option for the following year.
Greenacre took charge of the Phoenix’s final eight games during the 2025-26 A-League campaign after the departure of previous coach Giancarlo Italiano. His leadership during this period demonstrated his capability and commitment to the team, leading to his appointment as the permanent head coach.
“I want to grasp this opportunity and drive this club forward with everything I’ve got,” Greenacre said. “I’ve got the passion and the drive to do it, and I just want to drag people along for the journey, and let’s see what happens.”
The Phoenix chairman, Rob Morrison, expressed confidence in Greenacre’s abilities, highlighting his long-term dedication to the club. Greenacre, who arrived in Wellington in 2009 from England, has been part of the club’s journey for over a decade.

“He’s served a long apprenticeship at the Phoenix and we’ve watched him grow into a high quality coach,” Morrison said. “He knows the club inside-out and the hard work and professionalism he showed as a player have been carried into his coaching career.”
Morrison also noted that Greenacre’s playing style reflected the values the club aims to instil in its current team. “‘Greeny’ played for a Phoenix team that emphasised hard work and determination, kept their feet on the ground and put each other and the club ahead of themselves. They’re qualities we want him to instil in the current side.”
Greenacre’s tenure as an interim coach spans several seasons, including the 2012-13, 2016-17, and 2018-19 campaigns. Each time, he has shown his ability to lead the team through challenging situations.
“I’m more than ready for this opportunity now,” Greenacre said, expressing his readiness to take on the responsibilities of a permanent coach. His experience and deep understanding of the club make him a strong candidate to guide the Phoenix into a successful future.
