Bruno Fernandes in the running for top player award with PL assist record in sight

Michael Carrick Praises Bruno Fernandes’ Impact

Michael Carrick has voiced his belief that Bruno Fernandes should be in the running for the Premier League Player of the Year award following a standout performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford. This win brought the Red Devils closer to securing a place in the Champions League, with Fernandes playing a pivotal role by providing his 19th assist of the season.

Fernandes set up Benjamin Sesko for United’s second goal of the night, bringing him just one assist away from the Premier League record of 20 assists in a single season, which is currently held jointly by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. His involvement in the first goal was also significant, as he delivered a corner that Harry Maguire headed back across goal for Casemiro to score.

The result means that United only need two points from their remaining four league games to qualify for Europe’s top competition. When asked if Fernandes should receive individual recognition at the end of the season, Carrick said: “Hopefully he does. He deserves it for the impact he has had and the moments he’s created, whether it’s creating or scoring or having other influence within the group. He’s had a big season.”

Casemiro’s Farewell Performance

Casemiro was named player of the match on the night, and fans showed their appreciation by chanting for the Brazilian to stay at the club. However, Carrick confirmed that Casemiro is set to leave the club this summer, four years after joining from Real Madrid.

“It’s pretty clear, from both sides,” Carrick said. “Cas has had an influence within the group, he has got huge experience, he’s a big player and has achieved a huge amount in the game, and he has given everything you can possible give.”

Carrick added: “The situation has probably helped that, knowing there is nothing to hide. It’s football, players come and go. You’ve got to evolve and move on. That’s the world we’re in, but he’s given everything and it’s nice he’s got that connection with the supporters.”

Brentford’s Struggles at Old Trafford

Brentford arrived at Old Trafford with a clear strategy to challenge Manchester United, but they were unable to capitalize on key chances. Igor Thiago missed a first-half opportunity, and Dango Outtara hit the post in the second half, which could have changed the course of the game.

United’s second goal came from a Brentford attack that was broken up by Amad Diallo before Fernandes led the counter-attack. Despite the loss, Brentford remains in ninth place, just two points behind sixth-placed teams in the tight race for Europa League qualification.

Manager Keith Andrews expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating: “United started the game better than we did, they were dangerous from corner kicks and got the lead from that. I felt after that we calmed down a little bit, we started to take control of the ball a bit better, got to grips with the game, the occasion, and the opposition better and then I thought we were in a good place.”

He added: “We needed to control transitions better especially in the first half. The second goal was really disappointing, the timing and where we were in the game. But the overall performance of the players, the bravery of the players, was really impressive.”
