Cowboys face major setback as star faces possible long-term injury

North Queensland Cowboys Face Setback as Star Player Injured

The North Queensland Cowboys made the journey to Sydney to take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Friday night. While they managed to secure the two points, the team has suffered a significant setback with the injury of their star player, Jeremiah Nanai.

Nanai, who had returned to action in his second game following a shoulder reconstruction, was forced off the field in the second half with a similar injury. This latest incident adds to the challenges he has faced since sustaining a severe shoulder injury during the Pacific Championships for Samoa last year. That injury required a shoulder reconstruction and kept him out of the final against the Kiwis.

After a successful return to the field against Cronulla last week, where he came off the bench, Nanai was given a starting spot to help regain the form that made him one of the standout players early in his career. However, the new injury has cast doubt on his availability for upcoming matches.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten confirmed that the injury affected the same shoulder that had been previously operated on. He stated that Nanai will undergo a scan to assess the extent of the damage.

“It’s the same shoulder, he’s gonna get a scan,” Payten said. “Yeah, really disappointed for him because he worked super hard. We’ll see how it goes, but yep, it’s not great.”

Nanai, a Samoan international, has represented his country four times and has worn the QLD Maroons jersey on eight occasions since making his NRL debut in 2021. His early career was marked by impressive performances, particularly in his second year of first-grade rugby league, where he scored 17 tries in 23 games from the second-row position. This made him one of the most recognizable try-scoring forwards in the competition.

This injury is a major blow for the Cowboys, especially after a strong start to the season. Despite a hiccup in Round 7 against Manly, the team has shown resilience with two significant victories over the Sharks and the Bulldogs in the past fortnight.

Impact on the Team

  • Loss of Key Player: The injury to Nanai removes a crucial component of the Cowboys’ attack, which could affect their performance in upcoming matches.
  • Team Morale: The setback may impact the morale of the team, especially after a string of wins.
  • Recovery Timeline: The outcome of the scan will determine whether Nanai can return to play in the near future or if he will be sidelined for an extended period.

As the Cowboys prepare for their next fixtures, the focus will shift to how they can compensate for the absence of their star player. The coaching staff and teammates will need to step up to maintain the momentum they have built so far this season.
