Bath’s Champions Cup Campaign Ends in Heartbreaking Semi-Final Defeat
Bath faced a formidable challenge from Bordeaux Begles in their Investec Champions Cup semi-final clash at Stade Atlantique Bordeaux Metropole, ultimately falling 38-26. The English champions were determined to make a strong showing, but they struggled against an inspired and ruthless Bordeaux side that capitalized on every opportunity.
From the outset, Bordeaux demonstrated their attacking prowess, with their opponents quickly taking the lead. The visitors found themselves chasing the game after an early try, as their lack of outside defense was exploited through player Damian Penaud. Marko Gazzotti followed up with a try soon after, setting the tone for a tough match.
Will Muir, Bath’s wing, showcased his talent with two tries, one of which was a breathtaking finish. Louie Hennessey added a third try in the final quarter, keeping the game competitive. However, multiple errors proved costly, and Bath was unable to overcome the challenges posed by their opponents.
Bordeaux emerged as worthy winners, advancing to the final in Bilbao on 23 May. There, they will aim to retain their title against Leinster, who defeated Toulon on Saturday.
The match started with a 10-minute delay due to fan entry, and Bath appeared disoriented when their line was breached just 110 seconds into the game. Ben Spencer, England’s scrum-half, played a key role in the response, delivering accurate kicks to each wing. His second kick found Muir, who took advantage of a simple run-in to score.
Bath continued to face pressure as Louis Bielle-Biarrey scored a try in the left corner. A previous line-out drive had weakened the defense, leading to another scoring opportunity. Alfie Barbeary was instrumental in Bath’s efforts, but it was the handling of their backs and a clever run by Henry Arundell that led to Muir’s spectacular diving finish.
The pace of the game remained relentless, with Bordeaux striking again through Maxime Lucu, who capitalized on a brilliant effort by his team to keep Bath on the back foot. Lucu added a penalty in the first half to extend the lead to 24-12, putting Bath in a precarious position.
It was crucial for Bath to respond, and an inaccurate pass from Finn Russell to Santiago Carreras nearly resulted in a try. Bordeaux’s defense held firm, but it eventually cracked in the 51st minute when Hennessey side-stepped over the line, ignoring the overlap outside him.
Matthieu Jalibert began to exert more influence, with Bielle-Biarrey also seizing the moment as the favorites increased their dominance. Despite this, Bath managed to stay within five points with 15 minutes remaining, even though they faced constant pressure.
A powerful line-out drive by Bordeaux looked to have resulted in a try, but the ball slipped out of Gaetan Barlot’s hands as he went over. Charlie Ewels received a yellow card for pulling down the maul, and Bath finally succumbed when Ben Tameifuna surged over in the 69th minute. Temo Matiu and Tom Carr-Smith exchanged late tries, sealing the victory for Bordeaux.
